rums wort coil

Postby rumdidlydum » Sat Oct 17, 2015 1:39 pm

I need to make a wort coil. I know 13mm is ideal but i have plenty of 6mm to make one.
The downside i can think of is it will create back pressure on the pump. Which will be a little brown one.
And the heat exchange would be better
I Welcome some input :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I recon 6mm might be a bit small Rummy.

I made a coil out of 1/2" tube and that had a fair bit of back pressure.

I used a coil of copper bought from bunnings not sure of the length but it was about six meters and rolled it around a corny keg worked well but if I did it again would probably use a bigger diameter.

The out put temp was very hot and think you need a good flow of cold water through a large diameter tube to be efficient . :-B

If I could afford the copper and the pump and had suitable amount of cold water yes.

But that is not going to happen :crying-blue:

My plan is to circulate hot water pumped from the boiler through the coil in the mash tunn to maintain a certain temp.
Then run cold water to bring the mash temp fown for pitching

Have you had problems with maintaining mash temps in the past?
Before searching for elaborate solutions, I suggest insulating your mush tun better and see what effect it has on your temp drop

You will have fun getting that down to a suitable diameter
15mm conveniently can be bought in half hard coils and made like 1 2 many did very easily without having to anneal
