bluc wrote:Maris Otter bulk bags at 1000kg. We have nothing smaller sorry. $1,365 per tonne which is about 30% discount off list price. Just a monthly special if you reckon you can get through this much between you and your mates?

Freight would be another $200 though as we have nothing currently in Brisbane.

200 freight aint bad on a ton. 5 way split 200kg each 313 each landed gympie 8-}
May need to buy a pig to eat all the spent grain can you keep a pig in surburbia?

Price wise it really aint bad and will maybe look at this at some point..

Just checked on a local HBS store's website and they sell Maris Otter for $85/25kg bag :scared-eek:
So if you managed to wrangle up enough people this would be very cheap considering HBS prices
And if you offer the neighbours some pork for keeping quiet about the pig it could be a good trade off :laughing-rolling:

Righto I've had a go at Ian's recipe and fuck me its a disaster. Followed it to the letter. Did an iodine test and no conversion happened. Had an sg reading of 1030 which is low compared to the required 1060 in the instructions. Plus it built up pressure and foamed all over the place. Must mention the vomit smell it's produced fu#&in rank. Added 6kgs of sugar to get sg to 1060 pitched a wheat yeast and put the lid on and walked away confused. Any of you All Grain gurus point me in the right direction i'd be 1 happy chappy.

U missed the part in recipe where it said to use flaked wheat? U had no malt (=no enzyme) in there to convert the starch into sugar.

As far as I know, there no enzymes left in that after the extraction process, the heat kills them off. U need malted wheat grains.

i forgot to mention i did add a dry enzyme in the cooking process. I thought liquid malt just didn't give as much alcohol as it contains more water. Went and looked this morning and it has alot of foam on top. My main concern is the vomit smell. If this manages to ferment out how do you tell if the wash is no good

Vomit smell is caused by butyric acid a small amount is normal. I know some infection will raise the level of it as will stressing the yeast.You can run it but you will get esters forming. Pineapple I belive. You should be able to seperate it out during your cuts process...(or keep it in if you like it, )

i used a glucoamylase and a wheat yeast

Glucoamylse will give you some conversion. But you really need at least alpha amalyse. Preferably a combo of alpha/beta amylase and glucoamylse..

oh well i'll let it ferment out and see what we end up with. Next time i might try and malt some wheat and see how that goes

I’d recommend buying the malted grain to start with. I paid $50 for 25kg sack of malted wheat last week.
