Hi all,

I just put down two 23L washes using Bairds heavily peated grain and I have around 15kgs of spent grains sitting in a barrel.

I would like to make a sugar head to stretch the use of the grain. How much of the grain goes into a 27L wash?

Draft Recipe
27L water

Spent grains ??kg

4.5kg brown sugar
1kg Liquid Malt extract
Lowans yeast

Thanks
Rumble

at the moment, my method is to do similar to yourself.
mash 7kg of grain, sparge to about 22l.
add a few litres of backset and pitch us-05.
then with the remaining spent grains in the tun pipe, i dump them all into another fermenter which has about 4.5kg sugar dissolved in it.
i add about 5litres of backset, top up to 25 litres with filtered water and hit the sugarhead with yellow angel yeast.
the angel seems to rip any remaining goodness/taste out of the grains.
so with 15 kg of spent grains, i would split them in half and do 2 x 25l sugarheads.

Thanks Howard. I will do this. I think the Saunders Malt extract is only 80% fermentable so will add slightly less sugar in.
