SHOW US YA TUN'S! Equipment upgrade.

Hi all,

Mash tun with a strainer basket.... SURELY there is a company in Australia selling quality stainless brew/mash/stock pots with a strainer.

The best I've found is a 70L stock pot with a 50L strainer which will need fine mesh on the inside as it's made for pasta or the like.

Any help pointing me in the right direction please! OR let me know what you're using. I'm looking to get away from brewing in bags.

Thank you in advance. ^:)^

I bought an insulated one off ebay is thin walled flimsy but insulated. In hindsight i would have bought a plastic cooler..

Cheers Bluc.

I currently use a T500 urn with BIAB mesh bags. Not big enough for what I'm trying to achieve and the bags are a pain in the other proverbial 'bag'.

So, you would prefer to use a plastic container for mashing? Personally, I'm not a fan of introducing heat to plastic, even if it's only 70+ Celsius.

No but if re doing i would go plastic instead of chosen tun. Heavy pot with a inline rims and false bottom will work.
What are you mashing?

All grain.

Just distilled a wonderful heavy peated malt with a pilsner. About 30kg of grain so I have to break that down into 3 mashes through the T500. Pain in the arse. Hence the need for something bigger and more efficient.

So mostly barley? A recirc system will work well or buy a stock pot and make a expanding foam insulation cosy.https://www.instructables.com/The-Tun-C ... n-for-BIA/

If your planning on lots adjuncts(unmalted grain, corn oats etc) the infussion mash is your friend if doing barley(maybe with small amounts adjuncts) then a recirc system will work well.. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

No idea on your budget, but I've got a 70L nano X boiler and its definitely good quality. This is a link to the tuns.

edit: Strange, link seems to resolve to 5star... check out www.5stardistilling.com.au Brewery. edit 2: Okay, text replacer in effect. Maybe just search for nano x tuns :teasing-tease: .

Thanks Bluc for the link and info, but I'm just looking to buy something big (70+L) with a strainer basket to make mashing easier and more efficient.

I have since found a site (won't post it here :naughty: ) but they won't ship to where I am. Oh the joys!

Cheers

I do all grain beer , I use an esky with a diy copper pipe manifold made from 1/2" pipe, elbows and tees, some threaded brass and a 1/2" valve.
I cut slots into the pipe with a hacksaw.

Why don't you buy a 110L esky and make a manifold ?
There's the "bazooka" design , using a stainless steel mesh, about as easy as it gets.

Going for a 50 litre keg, recirc and false bottom for all grain mash, looking at a basket or BIAB but not there yet. Tasted a mates JD and its better than the real thing. This volume will allow a good single mash with 15-18kg grain and water, electrically heated. Cutting into the keg one weekend soon so first thing is a lid to fit it and a hole to suite.

It works!

Made AG George Washington rye whsiskey yesterday (bubbling now) in an effort to keep the qty of corn down so as to not have too steep a learning curve, plenty of malts in the rye so no issue there. Temperature control is critical. Thanks for the inspiration everyone,.

Nice job chipboy!
How many kg of grain did you end up doing? For my next all-grain, I'm looking at around 17kg in a 70l esky. I wasn't confident a 50l keg would be big enough.

Your concerns are real, depends on the grain, and target volumes

Corn I would not go over 5 kg in 25 litres, but in this instance i did 2.63 corn, 4,5 kg rye and 0.365 Malted barley. The basket was a blessing and a curse. It held the grains tightly and water around them was at a lower level, I only have a small drain and by not using the basket I could scorch, hence 25 litres at a time. Two batches for a 66 litres volume, ended up taking 5 kg out to be safe in one fermenter. I will stick with it, its a manageable volume to move once finished, manually moved as moving that much grain will not happen any other way

Knowing chipboy , I bet he collected the raw iron and forged it at home in his hand make forge , then he beat every inch of the steel until it yield into the shapes he required then he would have used his fingernails to make all the little holes as required
