As a Dairy Farmer i have a lot of cattle feed knocking around, predominantly corn, barley and oat but with a few other bits and bobs chucked in too. Now, as a newby im wanting to move away from neutrals and give my pot a go, and having an unlimited supply of grain here its seems a sensible move. Question is, what issues should i be looking out for and are there any glaring problems that stand out to you more seasoned fellas?

No fella rip into it you can use a wide variety of grain or any combination there of. The only glaring thing I can think of for you to keep an eye out for is pellets as these have green feed seed and god knows what in them. If you can get very cheap grain you may even want to look at getting in to malting and mashing as I find this is very rewarding and will naturally produce a superior flavoured whiskey IMHO

If ya got feed molasses you can make a nice rum too..

grain storage issues won't new to you so you allready know best practice here.

A good grain grinder , one you could later couple to a low rpm electric motor, pulley geared down, down the track would be one suggestion.

Feed grades may or may not need a quick wash if pesticides used but I'm not certain here just thinking out loud.

It would make sense over time given grain supplies go down the all grain path once you've a few runs on the board.

Using your trade accounts options to buy qty sugar at much lower costs perhaps

Having a secure out of sight storage area...stops the lips from flapping in smaller towns

If on gas rejetting burner to suit lp gas supply to reduce costs

that's about all i can think of bloke...

Well thanks for the info it all sounds pretty promising, i guess i'll get stuck in and see how it turns out! Got feed mollasses too so ill whack a rum on as well at some point, might just concentrate on the grain for now though. what sort of quantities are recommended to get a 25l wash going?
