It doesn't matter if you make a starter.

Use some sugar and boiled and cooled water (30C), or better still a little mollasses and water and make a 1l starter in a small container.

Pitch a teaspoon full or so and swish every half hour for three or four hours.

Try a google search of yeast starters or propogating yeast. There's a wealth of better info out there than i can give you.

Store unused dry yeast in the fridge.

I was just thinking of dumping the sugar and molasses into the fermenter with hot water to dissolve.
Let it cool then add the DAP and yeast, so how much dap and yeast is my question for today.

Dunno mate,
i've never needed DAP for a Molasses wash, it usually ferments quite nicely ;-)

A heaped teaspoon full (5 gms) will get you there, 2 teaspoons will get you there faster.

Yeast won't last long at that rate unless you start reusing it though :?

This is the Pugirum Yeast Bomb for 40l, divide by half.

2 vitamin B, crushed with mortor and pestal
5 teaspoons of 20-0-0, agrcultural fertalizer (dap)
1/4 teaspoon of epsom salt
1/4 cup bakers yeast
1 gallon water
Boil all for 15 minutes and strain.

Got the black wash on today.
3lt Molasses
3kg Raw Sugar
21lt water
1 Teaspoon Dap
1 Teaspoon 5Star Yeast
Took about 3 hours before it started bubbling but no massive eruption.
Doesnt smell too bad yet

I still have the little barrel, if thats what your on about.
To be honest, I am not looking for a full on rum, more a mild white rum (I explain it as a vodka with a nice molasses after taste)
Its bubbling away nicely and smells very nice compared to the "turbo's", even Mrs QLD doesnt mind the smell :handgestures-thumbupleft:
.
Some of you are probably asking "why is he going on about every detail", I figure there will be more (like me) that will do the same as me and want to slowly venture into the (to me) unknown.
When a new member ask's for an easy Rum run, we can point them here.
I will keep this thread up to date with my findings, experiments, taste etc as I move along, who knows it may turn into the full Rum flavour etc I dont know just yet.
Thanks for everybodys help thus far and a big thanks to 5Star for the food and fungi  :laughing-rolling:

A little update.
The ferment finished after 5 and a half days, well the bubbling through the airlock did.
I will let it sit till next weekend and run it, stay tuned.

Just finished running the wash.
I ended up collecting 3 litres in 500ml jars.
I will let it sit till tomorrow and see what I end up with.

I am not sure how it turned out, I tried it last night for the first time and tastes kind of musty.

Yes ran through T500, collected in 6 x 500ml jars.
They all smelled the same to me but I only kept the middle 4 for drinking

GOOD NEWS :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:
DeeJae just came over and he says it smells and tastes like a nice full flavoured rum.
It seems he just remembered that he stripped his before refluxing. :angry-banghead: nice little step to NOT TELL YOUR OLD MAN
So, my next run will be stripped then refluxed

why not water it back down and rerun it?

Should lighten up the flavour to a nice light rum ;-)

This is what I will do.
I have a second wash ready to run, I shall strip it, add the first batch to it and run through the T500 and see how that goes.
