Water didnt work. Bending it for the start of the first coil flattened the pipe badly. My guess is that the fluid of the water can spread itself evenly pushing out the pipe walls along the whole pipe allowing enough room to kink. meh i dont know. When i cut the pipe there was a lot of water pressure shooting out so if i could have gotten past the first bend then it might have been quite good. 3 tries, 3 fails.

On to salt.

took an hour to fill the coiled tube. lots of tapping and standing on a ladder. Just started coiling the copper and its going piss easy now. Coiled first time no stress and minimum flattening. Im about 6 coils in and dont see any problems getting it done.

I think winding went ok for a first shot especially under duress of previous failures. Its not as pretty as some others ive seen but it i hope it will be effective.

It was really easy with the salt. i never saw any chance of kinks occuring. Just apply pressure without pulling the copper tight and worked well.

So from my experiences if you are attempting the same thing.

*Buy annealed copper, i used 3/8. it will come pre coiled so you know its annealed. I bought 8metres and was left with a couple metres and 1 metre or failed windings.
*Fill it with salt. it might take a while but if you just want it to work without messing around then its worth the hour spent
*Make a rig like dixiedrifters. It might take an hour but its just pipe, and 3 bits of wood screwed together with 2 holes for the pipe. Buy the eyelet bolts, cable ties didnt grip well enough for me (unless perhaps you wrap some rubber around the pipe before cable tie?)
*dont put the copper tube wrapped around the 1" pipe rig like i did. Feeding it in it will give you better control
* When you wrap in cardboard, dont use that conveniently close by ryobi leaf blower box. Its glossy finish will make it a bitch to get out later :(

I havnt tidied it up yet, got all the carboard out or the salt out so ill update with how i go. Ive got it soaking in hot water right now.

I just gotta walk down the street now and find a skyline with a 3" exhaust to make sure it fits

well pics might take a while. i feel like ive got a bomb waiting to go off.

Trying to clear the salt. Used a hose on full pressure and waited for 10 mins and got a couple drips out. got impatient and put some blowtorch heat into the copper to see if that would help and the hose fitting blew off and got me.

so now its getting 120psi from the air compressor and its just sitting there slightly hissing out the other end. ive got it pointed at my unfriendly neighbors roof :naughty:

you could try holding it upside down and tapping it with a stick

it will loosen it up a little
then more water
then tap tap tap to loosen ...

i got one to clear doing that and bits of salt started falling out faster

nice looking coil

Putting it in a pot of boiling water could possibly disolve most of the salt

Success! Hose works well. just gotta be patient. which im not

Pics of my attempt with air pressure and the hose that worked in the end. No restrictions in the copper, its only half tap flow in that picture.

So ive found a PC cpu water cooling setup secondhand $30. ill go check it out.

If you are still looking for a thermometer check out Jaycar: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.as ... TID=1061#1
That one is $23 but I went in to get that and saw one that was just a plain probe (fits a 1/4" tube really nicely) and a smaller face, but easy to read and actually had a bigger temp range (not that it matters) for 10 bucks! Just a handy hint cause I looked at a few places and they can get a little pricey :P

That's true yeah I didn't even look at that haha. I gotta go back there anyway so I'll just return it :)

That one maheel posted looks like a ripper for 4.20 haha, might have to get one of those!

EDIT: Also sorry for the hijack, but I am almost finished building too and just wondering what MJ/BTU a gas burner would need to heat a 50L keg? I ask because they could possible be quicker than the element that I am looking at (2200W) and cheaper than 2 of them installed. Something like http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/DOUBLE-CAST-IRON-RING-WOK-BURNERS-LPG-GAS-COOKER-STOVE-/140681626642?pt=AU_Business_Industrial_Restaurant_Catering_Equipment&hash=item20c1474412 which comes with a hose, or the triple is $55 from BCF without the hose, at 31.5mj. According to this it will work pretty quick! http://www.phpdoc.info/brew/boilcalc.html
But would like a second opinion from some older heads :)

You'll want the 3 ring burner. Get an adjustable regulator too

update.. not much actual work done but collecting the bits.

Got some supplies from 5Star on here. Thanks mate looks great. He has supplied copper packing, yeast and nutrients. Nice, heavy and fine wad of copper :D

got a thermometer from jaycar for $20. Alcometer for $10 and some oak chips for $6.

Oh and i went to an auction and bought that urn for $5 ! dont know what to do with it, is it worth building a pot still for stripping runs/whatever??

And theres the misc other stuff. Condensor, the bokakob so far, the cpu water cooling system im going to play with.

I need to get serious about deciding how to join this stainless 3" tube to the keg. I dont really want to walk into ss supplier with a keg and 3" pipe and play with their showroom stock. Im a bit confused with this.

Also quick question - I want to do a TPWash, can i do it in an esky ok? cant see any info on it about food safe plastics or anything. I will follow the directions on the forum for the wash

Also how would i make use of the yeast nutrients in this wash?

I'm Hoping to get the slant plates made and put the cuts in the tube today
