Fermenter size

Postby matt » Thu Jan 26, 2012 9:30 pm

I'm after a few tips on the size of fermenter to use so as to minimise screwing around and maximise production.

In reality I will have one day, two at best once a week to process my wash (strip and spirit runs) using a 50l boiler and 2400w element.

Washes will be staggered say a week apart, so how many fermenter bins and of what volume would be ideal? In other words how much wash can I process in that time frame?

Is it necessary to transfer wash to settling bins and if so how long will it keep?

Ideally a 50L ferment is great for a keg run, however it depends on what your running and how well cleared it is.

To get advise on maximizing production you should speak to big don :text-lol:

Our aim here is to focus on quality rather than quantaty, even if your a total piss head a couple of 30L fermenters and a keg boiler will keep you well in stock ;-)

Mac's right. Do your ferments in 40l batches till you have it down pat. By that time you will also have your system down pat, your run times known and your drinking/gifting requirements known (cause all your mates are gunna be much closer friends than you remember them being).

Then size your ferments in multiples of 40. You may find you can get two strip runs in on one day for two weeks in a row, with a spirit run the next week.
That way a 160l fermenter (or two 80's) will be right for you.

If you are making more than one main drink it gets a lot more complex though. No-one but experience can give you the answers that will be right for your situation.
