T500 question

Postby marbaker » Tue Mar 20, 2012 5:14 am

hi folks i i have a couple of questions my first is i have read on this forum that people get between 3.5 to 4 ltrs of 93% on a 21 litre run,is that true because im only getting 2 ltrs at 93%,should i crank it up and pull more out ... thanks. My second subject is i was doing a run a couple of days ago, when the still got to tempreture it cut out stopped working,I thought straight away the heating eliment had packed in,iv had it about 2 years so its not covered under warrenty,so i decided to strip it down to find out where the cable goes into the bottom off the still through a plastic gromit is where i found the problem,so please check this if this ever happends to yourself.were the gromit is, it is very tight on the cable and kinks the flex so when you wind the cable up when you finished with the still after a while the cable will break inside the flex ie (brown-blue-green ) through the tightness of this gromit . so i had to cut the cable and rewire inside, very easy to do,so check this first or you could be paying out for a new boiler when its not necessary. i hope this bit info will help... thanks marbaker

I get between 2.8L and 3.2L typically using a 6kg Sugar+Turbo Yeast Classic wash (with Turbo Carbon/Clear) when keeping the still at just under 60 degrees at the water inlet/outlet.

Thanks for all the posts much appteciated, and the answer to your question QLD ANDY i do a TPW i use 5kilo's of suger 50ml lemon juice 1tsp epson salts 250gms of tomato paste and 100gms of alisons bakers yeast,When i come to distill the wash i keep the temp about 72c on the top and 42 - 43c on the bottom outlet so i get about 1 drop per second,i leave it like that for about 20 - 30 min then knock it up to 76 - 77 top and between 53 - 56 on the bottom then i take the first 100m and put away for window cleaner,i then take between 100 - 150ml and collect till i have enough to recycle in the following run, that is what i do for my cuts, know i take 5 x 400mls out at around 93 - 94% and water it down to 40% which gives me about 4 and half to 5 litre of alcohol.and that is what i do so far so good what do you think andy. thanks marbaker

Sounds about right to me Mar.
When I did the TPW I did notice a much lower yield (along with other things), thats part of the reason I stopped doing them.
So, sounds like you have a firm grasp of the hobby.

5kg of sugar wont yield as much as 6kg of sugar... not rocket science :))

thanks again qld andy and mc still for your replys, yeh i get a great buzz from the tpw im happy with the yield i get which is about between 92% and 94% all my friends and family think it tastes ok,my next adventure is to try the mash wash is it the UJSM or USSM,but it trying to get my head around it at the momment. is it difficult to do,and have you got a easy step by step how to do it.i forgot to mention at the end when i collect about 4 - 5 ltrs of 40% alcohol i filter it through carbon filter to mix the water with the acohol. Thanks again marbaker.

No need to filter if your cuts are good, and they sound fine.
I dont know about the UJSM as I stick to the Vodka Star :laughing-rolling:
