How much oak chips to use per litre of wash

Postby Bigtrev » Sun Sep 22, 2019 12:14 pm

Hi , just wondering the general rule of thumb for quantity of oak chips per litre of spirit. Should spirit be diluted to 40%abv or left at 60% abv and then watered down after flavouring.

Welcome bigtrev... i see this is your first post! :greetings-waveyellow:
It is customary to post in the welcome centre to start off and just say a bit about your setup and what your brewing plans are.
Not sure of the amount of oak chips as i only use staves, but def keep your spirit around 65% Abv for aging on oak. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks for the welcome guys. Couldnt find staves so got some jack daniels chipped barrels. Been on for about 4 weeks now and the colour is getting there but not much flavour. Put in about 200grams in 20 litres. Unsure if that is enough. Gotta thank guys on this site for their recipes. Will never use turbo yeast again. Happy with the TPW. Thanks for your advice.

TPW on oak isn't going to give flavour, well not much anyway.
Imagine aging vodka on oak ,.
It's the flavour in the wash that starts the process and time and oak enhance it .

So is TPW only useful for flavouring with essence? What is the most common use for TPW.

Pretty much.
Cordials are only 1 way of flavouring neutral.
Gin comes to mind as does all the "lollie" recipes etc
And before anybody says it, yes I know Absolute do an oaked vodka version but that's a vodka not a neutral :-B
