Gravity is fine should I just distill?

Postby Grip Twister » Fri Jan 24, 2020 10:49 am

Following on from my last post about thinking the fermentation has stalled.
Is it possible it could have all happened in the first 24 hours?
The gravity is 90 and has been for a few days.
Should I just throw it in the distill and let it rip!

Highly doubt it was done in 24 hours.

Can you post a pic of your hydro reading?

Gravity reading was just under 1.00 and after reading instructions says the 'TURBO YEAST should ferment in 48 hours.
Probably explains why it was done in 24 hours cause only put in 5.5kgs dextrose in 21 litres water I got only 1.5ltrs of Alcohol out of it.

I did another wash the other day with the recommended 8kgs dextrose which should take up to 5 days according to instructions.

It's stopped bubbling in 3 days. Gravity is just over 1.00

So my guess is because more dextrose I should get a bunch more alcohol given also the fact it went bananas for 3 days. Now nothing happening. Temperatures conditions were just under 30degrees celcius for most of the bubbling. It's still 27 degrees celcius today.

Well 7.7kgs.
Instructions say 8kgs dextrose in 20litres water at 30 degrees C.
I couldn't bring myself to put in exactly 8kgs. Felt my liver packing it in as I was packing it into the bucket. LOL.

Next wash I’d suggest try a recipe from the tried and proven section and ditch the turbos

Now you know how the yeast feel. They get stressed out when the alcohol content of the wash increases. Someone on here had a great signature, went something like "yeast: stress them out and they'll crap in your wash".

Currently having a makeover: 2" x 4 plate solid state bubbler (1" bubble caps, no sight glasses...maybe not for much longer!) on a bain-marie boiler.

Turbos will hamdle that concentration of sugar wash just (dextrose only) but its definitelyon the high side.
Theres good reasons most people here mostly dont use turbos even though the yields from them seemtto be out of this world.

Hi Grip Twister,

Can I make a friendly suggestion that you spend some time reading through the Newbies Corner posts?

There's really a great collection of topics in there that helps beginner's learn the basics and to get them making quality spirits from the get-go.

It will only take an hour or so to go through the posts, which I reckon is a bloody good investment in a hobby that you're likely to put many, many more hours into if you're more likely to get a great product out of it from the start.
