Glass Carboy!

Postby victorski » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:26 pm

Howdy, everyone! I've purchased two glass 23L carboys with taps from an online shop, it stated that they can be used to store wine and spirits.
I recieved them today and noticed they have plastic taps with some rubber/sillicon (I thought they might be brass since they said safe for spirits).

Has anyone had any experience with these? I wanted ones with taps to store my spirits and make it easy to transfer them to smaller bottles, but if there not safe i'll have to let them know and go through the effort of sending them back and getting a refund :handgestures-thumbdown:

Cheers,
Victor

Cheers maheel, they look great (I love the look of glass though, can see the spirits inside :) ) They cost me $85 each with free postage. I contacted the company and they said they have raised the same concerns with the manufacturer in Italy, apparently they have assured that they are 100% safe to store spirits... anyone else keen to give some insight ?

Cheers,

5L Demijohns you get from the HBS have a plastic stopper and some sort of silicon/teflon seal, I dont have any worries about them !!
Has any body else thought about it ??
if it is bottle strength I would say it would be no worries ! I have 94% abv  and some with 65 % abv some at bottle strength in my 5L demi's

Ya I see what you mean stubs but the alcohol is not always in contact with the lid ;) I was hoping to store 95% vodka in one and 65% UJSM in the other! Here's the link

http://www.aussiebrewmakers.com.au/reta ... _item.html

Hopefully it should be right, the manufacturer changed them from SS to plastic 1 year ago and I'm not the first person to raise concerns so surely if they were defective they wouldnt be selling them for spirits ? The fitting comes with a thick silicon o-ring which the tap fits into to make a seal, I could keep an eye out for a brass or SS one to substitute...

What size is the hole?

I'd be looking to replace with a stainless ball valve as soon as possible.

The hole in the glass is 18mm, the tap comes with what i suspect to be a thick silicon o-ring which has a hole that is 10mm. Might need a tap that is perhaps 11-12mm to ensure it makes a good seal. What a pain.... :angry-banghead:

You just need a bit of stainless or brass allthread the approx diameter and a couple of backing nuts and some silicon washers cut out of a baking dish or something. Screw a ballvalve on the end and yuo're laughing.

Hardest bit is putting the inside nut on. Or is the glass threaded?

Would bunnings stock hollow all thread and ball valves ?

yes in the plumbing section but it is in brass

depending on how big the hole is etc a skin fitting in stainless from a boat chandlery might work with a teflon (maybe silicone) gasket

if you can get one through the neck of the bottle on a string to lower it in... ?

Draino....as far as Im aware those seals are made of some sort of rubber......and technicaly are probably not "spirit safe"
I was poking around today in our local HBS.....just sortta window shopping and I found these.
http://www.brewshop.co.nz/flip-top-silicone-seals.html
Apparently they are a silicone replacement for the original rubber seals......ive been wondering for some time why no one was making them......nearly suggested it to 5Star as another line. There are 60 in a pack and mine cost $7.50.....I noticed that the ones in the link above are $11+
Anyway next time Im out your way Ill give ya half this lot.

Great idea maheel, looks simple enough :handgestures-thumbupleft: I might try to do that, the hole in the glass is 18mm but where would I buy one of those fittings from ? I tryed a local bunnings but they didn't have it :( also I had my heart set on having a tap, do they make small tap fittings at that size ? Mate SBB, I hate those rubber o-rings! They stink, does you LHBS sell them online or is that the link you posted?

Just dug around and found this...you could contact them and ask.
