sacrificial cleaning run

Postby Royalwulf » Fri Sep 24, 2021 11:33 am

I have a new pot still. I have done a vinegar run / clean
I have made a TPW for the sacrificial cleaning run.
The TPW started at 1.075, it is still bubbling very slowly and is at 0.90 after 12 days.
Keen to get it into the still and start another wash.
I presume i should leave it until the sg stops going down?

It is not clear. How long will it take to clear?
How will I know when it is clear? Will it be very clear and should I see the stuff at the bottom of fermenter?
What would happen if i didn't leave it to clear completely? Remember this is for a sacrificial run I am not going to use it.

I have more questions but will post them later

Thanks in advance

The fermenter will still bubble from time to time as co2 is escaping even after the ferment has finished running. Based off your figures i would run it. Being a sac run you aint keeping it anyway.

A tpw will never be clear to look through but it will be clear of floating particulate. You wont be able to see the bottom of the fermenter but you should see the sludge at the bottom if you look at the fermenter from the side. It will always have a pinkish tint to it.

While you are getting the hang of different washes taste before and after. You will soon notice the difference when they are ready.

Plus one on the tasting it mate. The first time it takes a lot of nerve until you taste it and then wonder what you were scared of lol. When it is done it will not taste sweet, and will almost have a bitter or sour taste , almost not quite though.
Hopefully what I said will make more sense after you have tasted the wash.
