Making Gin

Hi everyone,

Im looking at making Gin. I currently have a T500 and have a lot of extra neutral from TPW washes.

I would like use this neutral to make Gin. I was thinking of just buying one of the cheap stills off youtube purely just for Gin. Something like this one in the link https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/16508967338 ... Sw4-xggcXm

What are peoples thoughts on this?
Are these stills suitable to make a Gin run from a neutral?
Are the seals a problem. I sore some dude on youtube throw away the seal it came with and use a flour paste instead. Not sure if that would work with this still.

If its not suitable, what would you guys reccomend to make Gin from a neutral? Please keep in mid, im only looking at making a couple of litres at a time.

the thing in the link is garbage, dont get one.

I make small batch gin in an airstill and it goes well. Keep an eye out for a cheapy on eBay or gumtree

I make Zymurgy Bob's extract in my air still. I combine that with neutral from my FSD 2" boka. It makes a very nice gin.

For not much more $$ you could achieve a simple liebig pot condenser on your current boiler (including a soldering torch)

If you know someone with a torch or oxy set them its pretty easy...

i use one of these for my dedicated gin setup.

you will need lab stands and probably a bigger flask (i have a 5L dual neck)
plastic tubing for the liebig from the big green shed.
i use my old camping stove underneath for heat.
probably cost about $200aud to set up, doesn't owe me anything now.

I run a t500 too and made pretty much the same as this. Bought a boiler lid adapter from 5Star and it works fine. Haven’t tried making gin though. My Liebig is quite long so it does need support as the t500 boiler lids are pretty flimsy.

Banga81, my Liebig is 3/4” over 1/2” and about 900mm long if that helps. Knocks down the vapour from the t500 boiler easily.

Did you make it yourself? Am i better off using your dimensions? What are the benifits of yours compared to the one i posted?

I’m definitely no expert on these being a newbie myself. Other more experienced guys would have more of an idea. I just figured anything bigger than a 3/4” water jacket for a Liebig would be too heavy. If I was going 2” I’d make a shotgun condenser where you wouldn’t need the length. But as I said, I’m definitely no expert. Mine works for me. It’s easy to build.

100% go with the 3/4 over 1/2, they work best with a very narrow path for the water

Any legnth over 4-500 will do for a t500 boiler, longer will handle more watts at a later stage, but is a bit harder to position for take off and is heavier.

Try to get the .91 thickness 1/2" over 1.22, thin 3/4 will help a little with weight for a long one, but shouldn't affect performance.

Thanks heaps. Im assuming you still use 2 inch all the way up to the Liebig condenser? Do you then get a reducer straight from 2 inch to 1/2 inch (if one exists)? or do you need to step down from 2 inch > 3/4 inch > 1/2 inch.?

I had to reduce down from 2” to 1/2” in steps. I couldn’t get a direct reducer.
