How do you know if your still has puked and is it bad? Do you throw out and start again? Or is it salvageable?

Any distillate other then clear is usually a puke.
If it a strip run no problem spirit run will clean it up. If your doing one and done like on a bubbler and it happens add it into next run of same spirit.. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

That should be add to next of same spirit run. Dont just tip the cloudy spirit run into the new spirit.

Yep I’ve got another dextrose wash ready to go, I’ll run them in the same spirit run.
After that FFV, got a box of bakers yeast already :happy-partydance:

Are going to use Dextrose again or move over to sugar, the sugar will give you as good results at a considerable saving, also I have found when I use Dextrose (bulk supply bought to get me through the pandemic when sugar was had to come by) the wash is far more prone to puking, it seems to make the wash bubble like detergent. I can run the wash using sugar and no puking dramas. So when I have to use dextrose I leave a lot more headroom in the boiler.

Oh and if the last jars go cloudy normally because of fussrl oils, tails, rather then a puke.

what still are you using?

Symptoms of a puke:
normally inconsistent output be it surging or full on pouring out the end along with mash coloured distillate.

Causes can be:
overfilled the boiler. (especially rum you need to leave a lot more head room for rum)
not fully fermented the wash so foams up more.
running too much power in the boiler.
not fully degassed (but that can cause other issues before it causes a puke)

a bubbler or sight glass at the bottom of the column is a great way to see/ catch a puke as you start to flood the plates.
have caught many pukes dues to being a glass bubbler.
Also a splash of olive oil can help stop it.

Overly tight packing
Too much reflux coupled with too much power

Hi B-Man,
I was running my HBS pot head, water flow flow and power were ok, the first 3lt were clear, it looks like carbon from the turbo yeast ( I know, I know, last turbo yeast I promise) in the 2nd 3lt, no evidence of foam on the inside of the boiler at cleanup.
I ran the 2nd fermenter through the pot head yesterday and no issues, all nice and clear.
I may have forgotten the conditioner?
Cheers for the suggestions they will go in my notebook.
