First pot still run

Postby Dino61 » Tue Oct 23, 2012 4:04 pm

hi, hopefully i'll have time to run my malt extract based wash this weekend in my 50 litre odd pot still. Ive read about taking cuts , but do you discard the first 150ml or so as with reflux distilling? I'm running 1 2400w element so I know its gonna take a while to heat up, unless I get the chance to throw another in....the question is once its running , just run it hard out till the ABV drops off? or the taste and smell deteriorates?

Thanks, Dean

Hi Dino,
as this is just a stripping run, like you said- ditch the first 150ml and collect down to 20%ABV.
these are your low wines. The total of your low wines should be about 40%ABV, if it is more then dilute down to 40%.
then re run as your spirit run, making cuts. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Yeah in the pot mate :handgestures-thumbupleft: Let me know how it turns out, I have some malt extract base in a barrel at the moment. Wouldn't say it was too great off the still tho :laughing-rolling:

Ran the malt wash yesterday, went well, 5 hrs start to 20%abv, had a bi of foaming at first through the condenser, I think I had the boiler too full, turned off one 2400w element and it stopped and then a wee while later the clear spirit came through...I guess I've got around 12 -13 litres at 40%. just did two cuts, discarded 250ml, then took it down to 60% ( about 7 litres) then the rest down to 20%. To me the flavour seems to be in the last lot to 20% so I may mix it back together and put it on toasted oak and see how it goes.....
