Low wines storage.

Postby Lupus » Sat Oct 27, 2012 10:31 pm

For those who do stripping rush, what is the best way of storing your low wines? Glass demijohns?

I know some of you use 50l kegs. If so, is it a matter of removing and replacing the spear each time? Or do you modify the keg to make it easy to open and seal? And if so, how?

Thanks

a lot of kegs have threaded flange , find something to screw into it or alternatively cut a wooden bung to fit in the spear bayonet holder and screw that in. Glass or earthenware work fine too ;-)

For small volumes you can use 5L and + demijohn but if you are going to go stupid like me a 50L keg with a blank plate seal and try clamp will be good.

An end cap and tri clamp would work good or I just modify the existing keg flange to make it easy to remove.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Not keen on modifying a keg, so the best answer to date is:-

With regards to using Coney kegs, is the use of rubber seals an issue when it comes storage of fluid with higher abvs?

where do you get 25lt kegs and how the hell do you seal them with spray paint cans lids?

Are they some random thing from NZ? as never seen or heard of such things. Heard of 19lt, 40lt, 50lt and 80lt kegs never 25

Post mix kegs 19lt are good for low wines.

yep alco and rubber don't mix so out with the seal.

Personally use a 50Lt keg, sometimes with bicarb in for cleanup so sealing is just a oak bung nothing flash but it works.

Bt1,
How do you go about draining keg to boiler afterwards? Just a siphon?

I am leaning to a 50l keg as it keeps the low wines in one container and am just trying to sort through the logistics of the option. Using a spray paint lid or cork bung is easy enough. Drainage is the next exercise?

When we done our last stripping run we used a 50 lt S/S keg and it worked a treat, it was a bit on a hassle transferring the low wine to the boiler, we used a jug as this keg is set up as boiler pot, We are going to fit a tap to it in the near future for ease of transfer of distillate (lazybastardathaert). I'm going to store the finnish product with oak staves inside a S/S keg as I see this as an affordable method of storage for stuff you want to age.

Lup,

I syphon but use a 35mm reinforce tube- bunnings irrigation isle - it's much faster than 1/2" tap or drain, keg full or empty in <2mins have it on a timber strip so i can acurately gauge bottom(adjustable for hieght- 2x SS hose bands) avoiding last 1 -2 lts for any sediment on the way in don't care when emptying...fast cheap effective.

What I have done is have the keg you are putting the low wines In set up as a boiler as well so no need to transfer! I know this is not particle for everyone but it works for me

S&L
How many boilers do you have? :)

The way I see it, I am going to have to run multiple stripping runs to warrant a spirit run. As I will only have boiler, that may not feasible. I would make things easier though. :)

25 and 50l d-type kegs is the standard for local brews here
But I got these ones decomissioned (no spears top rim cut off) from a keg servicing company. they arent d-type someone said they might be Asashi Kegs.
I stole the spray paint can lid idea from Kimbo or Cupcake. works brilliantly. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

when is the alco coming into contact with the rubber seals? besides pushing it out of the keg with co2
what would you recommend replacing the seal with?

I will be storing low wines in a 19lt keg as well but was just going to push the low wines out of it with co2. Is there another way of getting the low wines out?

Kiwikeg,
The spraypaint cap, is it a loose fit or a firm fit?

Poompy,
In a corney keg you could siphon out like someone mentioned above besides pouring or pressurizing. Is there any need to use CO2 to pressurize?

nah dont see any need to pressurize other than pushing the low wines out.
But as you say siphoning can be done. Would be easy and it would be cheaper than using co2 to push it out.
Been going through it in my head for storing my rum low wines.

Cheers!
