Can I take the packing out of my still to strip?

Postby Jimmy1 » Fri Jul 08, 2011 6:16 pm

I have an ultra pure still, and I was told that the scrubbers used are specially inserted a I wouldn't be able to put them back in the way they came out. I don't believe it but knowing my luck the dude at the HBS was telling me the truth and I will stuff my still and become very sad  So I was wondering if I can take the packing out to learn how to strip washes?, and if I can how many should I take out?

I cant see why you wouldnt be able to this, we all have to renew or clean our packing at some stage.

I have never seen the still up close, but if you put the packing in the same way it came out there cant be too much go wrong.

For stripping you want as little reflux as possible, so no packing in the column is the go ;)

Cheers.

I pull out the scrubbers out and put them back in frequently. No problem.

Easier to get a pot still that fits your boiler more efficient,

Yeh mate just pull the packing out its easy as to do !
i had one of this stills and tried a stripping run without the packing in ,
was not very impressed with it , only put out about 1.4 l an hr .
As suggested above your better off with a dedicated pot still if your interested in doing stripping runs on a regular basis
