Water pump noise level

Postby Rachis » Wed Jul 15, 2015 9:49 am

Hi all,
During a stripping run last night my baby 12v bilge pump finally died, i have been asking a little much of it supplying a 4 plate bubbler then back through a radiator. I am looking to upgrade to a bunnings clean water pump but i am worried about the noise level of these pumps. Can anyone comment of how loud they are during operation? My water tank (220lt tank) is up against the fence and i am sure the neighbor's would get fed up if it was screaming along all day.

This 550W is what i am looking at.

Also if this post doesn't belong here can the mods please move it.

I have no experience with pumps but it says submersible. This may block a lot of noise out?

I recently bought the larger 750W version of that pump and have only dropped it in my swimming pool briefly to test it out and it seemed fairly quiet to me. That being said it was in an in-ground pool so I can't say whether or not running it in a tank that is above ground will be noisier.

Cheers,
Prof. Green.

I have the same 550, when it's running in the outside spa pool I can't hear it at all.
My run to the bubbler is 15 meters each way and I kind of wish I'd gone with the 750

I have a similar unit, you need to get fairly close to the tank to be able to hear it.

Its just a constant low hum, I doubt the neighbours will be too worried :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I got the 350w version in a 120L wheelie bin. It is loud in my small garage and you can hear it through the roller shutter but no one has asked questions.

I generally have wear headphones while brewing (over 1 ear or low enough to hear the motor/boiler) and never worried me.

I think you will be fine mate.

I also reckon its worth the extra few dollars to upgrade to the 750w.

It never hurts to have that extra flow up your sleeve should you need it, and the noise level will be no different from the 550. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I place a rubber door mat in the tank and sit the pump on that, it dulls the noise quite a bit ;-)

I have a 750w ozito submersible in a IBC, and it is just a low hum from 2 or 3 meters away.

Really low.

If I was the neighbour, I recon I'd be hard pressed hearing anything from inside my house mate.

Thanks for all the help fellas, i will definitely uping to the 750w for future expansion. The rubber mat to dampen the noise is a great idea Mac.

I picked up a 750w dirty water pump from bunnings today for around $100, and it is unbelievable compared to the tiny 12v bilge i was using before.

For anyone looking at a water pump just skip the middle man and get one of these, it is quieter than the 12v pump in a 200lt tank, and doesn't bat a eyelid at supplying the reflux condenser, product condenser and back.
