Is it safe to use a wine cork for the thermometer probe bung.
I have found info on cork as gasket material but I wish use it in my homemade vm lm still and want to be positive it is safe in the vapour.
My other option is to order a 1/2" bsp stainless bung and drill it (o no not again) and use plumbers ptfe tape to seal it.

If its natural cork, it is fine.If its that processed stuff then not advised due to the adhesives used to bind rhe cork granules together

So does your average cheap wine cork have thses adhesives. Other people have used them but just not sure.

If you have any high abv sitting around drop a cork in and see if it degrades or changes the spirit. Alternatively you could drop it in foreshots

Have not got any at the moment as I was borrowing a still but thought I'd build one.

This is Natural cork ...it is largely huge chunks with a natural grain....when you try to tear it apart ,its stays as a chunk

Thankyou that will get me going shortly. My aquarium heater to warm brew and carbide tipped holesaw to put element still have arrived so if I can find a cork I am nearly ready. Nearest clarke rubber is 400kms soI'll have the hard task of cracking a few wines. :D
