Hi

I was talking to the guy at the hardware and he says they are made from High Density Polyethylene (Virgin Material) so are food grade. Can you see a problem with using it for a wash? At only $58 with a lid I Thought is was not a bad price. I read some of you guys are using buckets with glad wrap over the top etc, thing this is just a bigger version of that.

Just starting out I'd be inclined to use a smaller fermenter until you get your wash's down pat, 200L fuck ups can be expensive :laughing-rolling:

Hey mate, I usually work backwards with my plans.
1, how long do I want to sit in front of the still
2, How often can I make a run with the still.
3, how large a wash do I need to make to get within those guidelines.

I do a 50 litre wash in a 70 litre ferment container. I can strip that from go to woh in around 3 hours with a pot still.
Running that through a reflux can triple that time.
How long do you want to sit on your arse?
I got better things to do.

got hold of 200l foodgrade barral just like cupcakes for $20.
i see cupcake and others just use a HBS airlock.
-before i drill my barrel lid and is there any better options for a airlock?
-should i put a tap in the bottom?
-will also be putting in a aquarium heater. any traps with that plan?
and sit it on a polystirene block to insulate it from the concrete floor.
this will be a origanal recipe ujsm wash that i hope to keep going forever.

I just use a bit of garden hose into a 700ml bottle of water, I found my molasses ferments would just blow the HBS air locks out of the lid :))

Just a word of advice if using HBS airlocks,and doing any sort of ferments,that aren't gunna be run for a while....make sure that after fermentation is finished,keep plenty of water in the airlocks!!!
There is nothing worse than getting to your 4th or even 15th gen UJ or rum,and finding out that the water has evaporated out of the airlock and nasties have got in and fucked the whole wash...I say this from experience :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:
I now have 40l of both rum and UJ backset in my freezer,just in case :handgestures-thumbupleft:

How did you find the blue drums smell? I had a look at a couple today. Don't know what was has been in them, but when I took the lids off the smell nearly blew me off my feet. A real toxic plastics smell :silent:

Old mate said to me clean as 'says all salesmen'. Smells like somesorta of salt and vinegar chips. Old mate reckons the fisheries had it before me. It's a little overpowering but the kids off airing and I'm in no rush. Plenty of detergent scrubs and sterilizing and she'll be away :handgestures-thumbupleft:
