Wooden barrels shelf life?

Postby bluc » Sun Jun 28, 2015 1:19 pm

Wondering do wooden barrels have a shelf life? Do the reach a point where they no longer impart flavour?
Second question would be: are they then suitable for long term aging without "over oaking" the spirit? Or is it better to get the spirit to where your happy with it then re bottle to glass?

The more you use it the "duller" the effect of the timber will be, wether that is a good or bad thing will depend on what you are doing.

Barrels can always be re shaved and charred/toasted :handgestures-thumbupleft:
