Quarter Sawn American Oak (VIC)

Hey Folks,

I've been trying to track down a Victorian supplier of 1/4 sawn American Oak for but am struggling to find anyone online (lockdown is kind of stopping me from doing a drive around). Would be keen to know if anyone has some recommendations?

I'm looking at emulating one of the BadMo barrels off of another well known forum.

The Bain Marie inserts/canisters were easy enough to get hold of though!

TIA

I found this https://www.woodsolutions.com.au/wood-s ... ican-white

Bout half way down there is a find supplier button. It will need to be seasoned. At least one set of seasons in full weather apparently..

Thanks Bluc

Yeah I spotted those two but they seemed to be more for the trades than home hobbyists.

I did dig up a few others but their websites are questionable.

- Mahoneys Timber & Hardware
- Timber Revival
- JAKS
- Matthews

Lots of places sell Am. Oak floorboards but they're only 19mm thick.

Being floor boards you need to be sure they have not been treated to keep bugs from eating them.

I found a great supplier in Queensland but nothing local. The Queenslander only sells them as dominoes but they are already toasted so super convenient and consistent :laughing-rolling:

Yeah I definitely want to avoid timber treated in any way. Partly why I've avoided buying a barrel and steaming the staves straight because who knows what it's been fumigated with.

I've purchased dominoes from QLD also guessing from the same supplier.

I guess I'll need to keep aging in glass for now and burping the jars once a week. Kind of fiddly though

Might be worth contacting some cooperages also.

If you grab the right bit of 50x50 oak and cut it up the guts the right way it becomes quarter sawn 2x1

Getting hold of a lump of Oak might be a bit tough in Australia. Unless I take a trip up to the Avenue of Prime Minister in Faulconbridge. 1 Oak planted for every PM since Barton.

Of course if someone knows a more legal source I'm happy to saw it myself. The FIL has the right kit

Winery or cooperage is your best bet.
Many wineries will use oak staves in their stainless tanks. You just need to time it right when they are draining the tanks.

I think around 230mm (haven't bought them yet) and 6L. Was going to wait until I could get some Oak before getting the inserts

Did anyone manage to locate a supplier of this 1/4 sawn oak? I am quite keen to try this out myself.

I too am chasing some oak in Melbourne Victoria to make a badmo barrel.

I'm currently emailing cooperages to see if I can get hold of a barrel head to cut to shape.
