Hopefully there's no problem me posting this link here...but I found this experiment conducted by Pintoshine and thought some of our members could really benefit from it.
He tested both toasted and charred oak in the same amount of distillate, and provided smell and taste tests.
Very interesting, and keep in mind that Pint had been opposed to toasted oak a couple of years previous to this experiment.
