Filtering oaked spirits

Postby CH3CH2OH » Wed Aug 19, 2015 1:30 pm

After aging, what are you guys using to filter your spirits?

I have filtered it twice through a coffee filter with a cotton ball in the end of the funnel. I have got all the sediment out and it looks completely clear until it sits for a few days then i get a thin darker layer on the bottom of the bottle.

Any ideas on what to use to filter this out?

I filter once through a paper towel and have never seen sediment like that...

I get sediment like that too. After oaking i dont really strain only a mesh filter. I always assumed it was the HBS Essence

Chill Filtration
Does this help?

Cloudiness is caused by the presence of natural fatty acids, esters and proteins in the whisky. usually under 46%

so a common problem that distilleries do to fix it, purely cosmetic :handgestures-thumbupleft:

It looks like protein...cool the bottle and run through a paper filter... or just drink the bugger...either way will work.

:text-+1: doc is on the ball, cold crash is in a fridge over night then pour it to a fresh bottle or do as wood duck and probably most others do just keep your teeth closed. If you're not selling it no harm done. It'll still continue to age if it still has some wood...
though a much much much slower rate :obscene-drinkingchug:

I have some spirits on oak chips that has been in a 2litre bottle for 6 and a half years now, should be good. must get around to trying it. Would like to leave it ten years .

Well you wouldn't want to risk ruining a good spirit run by re-running it with TPW low wines :laughing-rolling:

I seem to get the same haze/ sediment issues when I oak mine, but only after I cut down the proof to about 45abv. Drives my crazy.

If you're keen, go to your local scientific supplies store (called eBay) and get yourself some glass paper filters (or even some regular fine paper ones). They're super fine and remove everything that isn't a liquid but tend to clog on badly tainted liquids if you don't put some cotton cloth to filter the larger particles. Oh and they're slow so only filter that last little bit that has all the floaties in it.
I'm lucky I can get my hands on a few of them for nix and they work a treat for small volumes.
Only filter it after you've cut it down to your drinking strength.

I have a couple of rum failures... wondering just how neutral can you get by filtering? The rum is oaked will it pull virtually all flavour (i realise some molasses flavour will stay) from it making it suitable for some liquer baileys kaluha type drinks?
