Modular Filter

Postby r1zzla » Fri Aug 09, 2019 4:29 pm

While I was tending my Neutraliser (3plates, 4Tees), stilling a 65L batch of 30% rum wash last weekend, I was cleaning the spare tees, plates, pipes etc that I had used for a small gin run with my carterhead the day before, I had the parts all laid out for drying, when I thought a few more parts from the 'spares' cupboard and I could knock up a filter .....

:happy-partydance: holds just over 3L, with activated charcoal from top of 4-2" reducer
You gotta love this modular system

I'm interested to see if I can use it to make a Bacardi style rum (age as normal, then strip the colour and some flavour)

Have a squizz at my efforts

I since did a batch up about 30 litres aged on french oak for a couple of years. Really disliked it brown, several passes through the filter and I prefer it over my american oak filtered white.

And I thought i was being clever  it's been done before and better !
After a bit more reading, I think the extra 500mm 2" section is a must, but even what i've rigged up now seems to make a difference.

Yeah go nuts on extra extensions until you hit the ceiling. Fill her up and control the speed with your ball valve and walk away for an hour, assuming you have a large collection jug underneath :)

I typically have mine exiting the filter at a slow drip, maybe a drip every 2 seconds. This will all depend on the amount of oak already in the rum and how much filter medium you are using.

I prefer my white over bacardi. Bacardi still tastes too sweet and has too much artificial mouth feel. That's my 2 cents.
