Shotgun question

Hey brains trust, I’m making my 4” pot and was planning to put 2x 3600w elements in it. I was planning a 2 inch shotgun but was starting to think maybe I should stay 4” all the way through. Any thoughts ?

2” shotgun in stainless with 6 or 7 tubes at 750mm long will knock down twin 3600 watts but will need a reasonable amount of water
You say all the way through 4” do you mean from the highest point of the column down to the shotgun or are you thinking of a 4” shotgun :o

My 2” knocks down 8400w, I have 2 x 2400w and 1 x 3600w elements, proper over kill but hey 8-}

Yeah stick with 2" for the condenser. As maxxx said, 750 mm with 7 x 1/2" internal tubes should be fine. You could probably go shorter. In stripping runs you'll use both elements, but in spirit runs you definitely won't want to run full power. You could get away with a much shorter shotgun for your spirit runs. It's your stripping runs that you'll need to design your condenser for. It won't matter if your product comes out a little bit warm on a stripping run, so long as there's no vapour coming out too. If it stays below 35 degrees I'd be happy. Just use a power controller on your stripping run to keep the power input to a level your cooling system can handle. You'll need a power controller for spirit runs anyway.

The efficiency of the shotgun isn't just based on length and internal tube numbers or sizes, water flow rate and baffles inside the condenser can also affect it significantly.

Just out of curiosity what’s your heat up timer with that many watts on a keg boiler

I’ve got a 100L milk can and it’s a tad over 1hr to come up to temp :music-deathmetal:

Thanks Maxxx, it’s 4” column that I was going to reduce to 2 inch before the PC but really want to be able to operate as fast as possible without compromising quality.

Thanks DB I just don’t want to build a 4” column with 7200w and then find the condenser can’t keep up on the stripping runs.

Ok cool, I think I have enough material for a 750 long shotgun and will try to fit 7-8 internals.

8 will fit and is just within the minimum specs from the math I posted here:

But you going to have to be good to get it to not leak with around 5mm between tubes

Just to shame myself, it’s almost an exact replica of the FSD 2” condenser, but after all my trials and fuck ups im sure it cost me way more :crying-blue:

I already have the copper so I may aswell try, if all fails I’ll have to buy the fsd one.
