Fermenter to boiler pump

Postby jord4231 » Wed Nov 26, 2014 10:12 pm

Hi all I've been reading a lot of posts lately and for quite a long time about pumps

Forgive me if this is posted else ware
Also I'm trying to take my mind off my dog who ran away a last night (all we have been doing is searching for her)

Anyway I've been using a drill pump to transfer my wash to my boiler for distilling, It has finally failed, So I went to Bunnings to buy a new one got the new one and it won't pump at all. (taking it back some time soon)

I had a look at this pump whilst in Bunnings http://www.bunnings.com.au/ozito-36w-60 ... p_p4816367
I want to be able to use a self priming pump (so it will suck from the top of my fermenter) I do not want to add taps or valves to my fermenters
Only thing that stoped me buying this is in very small print on the side of the box it says not suitable for drinking water
Any suggestions? I used to use a small pond pump but found it stirred up the crud from the bottom of the fermenter so I would rather a non submersible pump

They are painfully slow and if it gets a bit of corn or something its a major job to clean
Taps on your fermenters are the way to go

I use one of the Keg King brewing pumps, a little cheaper than the Ozito pump, food grade and good at boiling temps
And it's prewired for 240V

I use a magnetic drive pump which is good for high temperatures, so you can use it for pumping out your still so that you can do quick turn arounds.
A quick suck on the outlet is all you need to prime it.

my 60L fermenter sits on either an esky or a milk crate and I let gravity do the work for priming
I plan on making a couple of stands in the next couple of months for fermenters and aging/low wines storage for the express purpose of having them up off the ground to either gravity feed or gravity prime

That's the one!
Only I have the old green version from before KK started getting them custom made (and I had to wire the plug)

I totally didn't even notice you were siphoning from the top of your fermenter, not the fermenter tap
The other option is to hook your hoses up, then suck through the outlet to pull the liquid down into the pump (I'd keep the top of your outlet hose above the liquid level)
Once it's through the inlet and coming up into the outlet, you can put your outlet hose into your boiler and flick the pump on

The only thing im thinking is what will happen when im getting to the lower end and the pump sucks a little bit of air being non self priming it would just stop wouldnt it?

Thats really the only reaon I looked at the bunnings one. Looks good bar the not for drinking water on the side in tiny print

As long as there is still liquid in the tubing to keep the siphon going down to the pump, taking in a little air won't stop it
I guess you'd just have to watch the hose and make sure it's at the appropriate level to keep sucking
