Ok , this is my first WBAB ingredients .
5 kg raw sugar .
3 cups Weetbix , 3 cups Allbran .
Juice of 1 Lemon .
75 grams of Lowans bakers yeast .
1.5 teaspoons of Epsom salts .
Followed the intructions and lastly put the yeast and Epsom salts in at 30° C , 25 litre mark on fermenter .
It had stopped fermenting and left it another week .
I started doing the first 4 litre batch of the stripping run in my standard Airstill as per the flow chart in this article (page 5)
Airstill Brief SS (1).pdf

I took the first 1350 ml as per the flow chart but it only came out at 30% ABV .
Is this right or am i doing something wrong ?
I haven't thrown away what was left in the Airstill , it has been sitting in the still for 2 days .
Can i just keep topping it up to the 4 litre mark and go again ?
This is the first time i have done stripping and spirit runs as i have previously only done Turbo washes .
Your help would be appreciated .
Thinking i will have to save my coin and get a bigger pot still .
Cheers,
Bucket .

I don’t have airstill mate so can comment specifically but it seems you might be trying to combine methods of collecting a certain amount along with stripping/spirit runs.
If you ar e doing a stripping run you fill the still and keep running it until you have all the alcohol out of the wash. Or at least until the abv is around 15% or so. What you get is called low wines you then combine them you will need to make sure the abv is at or below 40% and that run is a spirit run.
Seems you are stopping a stripping run after a certain level is collected if I am reading your message correctly. That may be what is adding to your confusion.
What is left in the still after you stop collecting is essentially water and will only dilute your wash if you add it to the still without emptying it
Hope that helps

it's probably not good to collect an exact amount, rather than a certain ABV.
if you were doing this recipe perhaps the ABV of your wash was only 9-11%.
the airstill figures are based on turdbo which produce 14%.
i usually strip until my whole collection is 40% abv, which is usually down to 15% at the spout.

what's left in the still after a strip run is backset, which is saved and used in new fermentations (in moderation) and sometimes in spirit runs.

Thanks Wellsy and Howard , that is some good info .
So i guess i keep taking samples out of the collection jug and pour some into my alcometer tube and check the ABV ?
To get the 1350ml took 4 hours :scared-eek:
This is going to be a long journey until i get a bigger still . :-B

Get another air still and run them both at once to cut your run time down

Hello bucket
Take your time mate, if you rush in and get hardware now while you are still working out what you want you may end up wasting money long term.
Many guys here upgrade and many enjoy their airstill for doing gins.
Everything about this hobby takes time mate, I did a spirit run yesterday and it took the best part of 10 hours, it was an awesome day. Had the ice hockey then the afl on the shed while the run was going. I have a 50 litre still lol.
Use your airstill to get a handle on what you want to make, take your time and explore what path you can take to upgrade if that is your preferred option. Definitely worth giving 5 star a call but we all have budgetary constraints:)

Been thinking if I get the 200 litre boiler and keep it in the house or would be a 40 hour run time so it could be used as the heater for the house.
Now there is an idea lol

Stig - I'm starting to save up already. :shhh:

My son is planning to drive up to Brisvegas to visit family in August - I'm planning for him to pick up a phone order from you. :happy-partydance:

14 hour day doing a 52-55 litre wash using the reflux column is faster than using my airstill, but its still a very long day stuck in the garage.

Woody when you do upgrade go 4" :handgestures-thumbupleft: now with my homemade BD burner it's just over an hour to heatup 45 litres (which is the max I put in a 50 litre boiler) then I take it nice and slow at 1.5 litres an hour. So basically all up 5 hours run time start to finish on doing a grain mash, now doing a 45 litre 40% run would be close to an allday run but eh the yield would be over 20 litres of 90%+ :laughing-rolling:

Now when doing ferment runs I do get 3 runs easily out of a 8 kg lpg gas bottle so I'm sure the cost of the gas would be way cheaper than using the grid :laughing-rolling: I may just have get a few more solar panels and wire them in series to get 360 volts DC so I can power a 2400 watt element direct :handgestures-thumbupleft: Personally I swore off the grid for good over 20 years ago and never looked back so it isn't that hard to do :laughing-rolling:
