Hi all just wondering when running a tpw through my pd reflux still, would it be the same process as running a turbo through it.
Ie close output valve in slow postion
Turn water.on at 50c
Temp stabilize and collect heads
Turn valve to full open and collect till temp rises 1 degree
Steps in a nutshell.

You could, or you could run it as slow as you can and do some cuts and make some quality gear :handgestures-thumbupleft:

The only way as far as i know to slow it down would be throttle it with the output valve, but the colum is open at top where cooling lines come out and liquid may spill out the top instead of refluxing back down the colum. Its a 2000w element in boiler which cannot be controlled

That's the idea mate. It's a LM or Liquid Management still, the output valve controls the reflux/off take ratio and therefore purity.

What type of valve is it?

Its a standard one that comes with pure distilling rig. The fully open position is about 4-5mm and in the fully closed position has a .05mm hole
The idea is leave it in closed position to colllect the heads and once temp has stabilized and you have collected heads fully open valve to start hearts collection.
I was thinking it will be a trial and error for a while.
Maybe open the valve 1/3 or even 2/3 to collect insteadnor fully open that may allow it to reflux more and get some really good gear out? :handgestures-thumbupleft: :handgestures-thumbupleft:

First tpw 5 days fermenting in hot humid Townsville now has a Sg of 0.950 colour has changed nearly cleared starting Sg was 1.070 think I might run it on Sunday let's see how it goes Ferment temp in the shed was average 34C

I can't really be sure from the photo but is that a hydrometer you're using and if so what's the reading?
If it's an alcometer it won't work.
Other than this, two things to check for:
Taste it, should taste like a dry Chardonnay (tomato flavoured) should not be sweet at all.
Listen to it, if you hear fizzing (like a glass of coke) then it's still not fully fermented out. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hey stemmy what water are you using :laughing-rolling: I'm trying bore water for my condenser but there isn't enough flow in the half inch need to buy some 3/4 inch damn water restrictions

Reakon she's ready mate :handgestures-thumbupleft: plus I think that looks like the same hydrometer I have ( can maybe make out red and green sections...) if so I'd read that top number as 80? Am I right?
If I am the reading would be .990 which is spot on.
Either way , may as well run it.
But don't use that plastic measuring cylinder for measuring abv. Only ok for low strength washes, not high strength alcohol

Question all do i need any de foaming agents when i run it or is that purely for distilling turbos

Depends on the wash.

Sometimes I use a small dollop of canola oil, it helps :handgestures-thumbupleft:

A fully fermented TPW will not foam :-B

Just finished first tpw got 3ltrs @44% finished product
Couldnt believe how much better it is than the turbos
No bitterness no overpowering smell no need to carbon filter and really smooth although ( i think i let abit of tails in, missed itnin last cut.)

Next does anyone know or have the link to wheatbix recipe and is this grain recipe ok for a pure distilling rig or does it need to be done in a pot still. :think:

Is the 3l watered down or did you have troubles off the still?
The wbab has a better mouth feel than the tpw in my opinion than the tpw but is a bit more expensive.
This was pointed out to me by Rumdiddlyum. And can lead you into the world of bubblers, think of it as a gateway wash, but in a good way :laughing-rolling:
