Making a Gin Extract

Gin extract for those that dont have the means or want to run a gin. It makes a good drop. I do it in an airstill and it is handy to have sitting around.

35g juniper berries
2g coriander seeds
2g cardamon pods
2g orris root
1g lemon myrtle / citrus peel
400ml water

1. Smash ingredients and add water.
2. Run still & collect 75mls extract. Should be cloudy, this indicates good extraction of the oils.
3. Combine extract & 75mls of 95% neutral. You now have 150mls of extract.

Dosage
10mls per L of 40% neutral.

You now have enough for 15 litres in a fraction of the time it takes to run a maceration.

Thanks BigRig
This looks very interesting.
I'll add it to my list of gin experiments.

Hi Big Rig
Tried this today.
Not cloudy and flavour did not seem very strong.
Have mixed the distillate with with neutral and will see how it is tomorrow.
The leftover mixture in the air still was very pungent so I have added a bit more water to it and left it to steep.
I will try that tomorrow and see how that batch turns out.

A very interesting experiment.
Cheers

Hi Big Rig
The one I made yesterday sort of tastes like commercial gin - rather than the strong flavour of a gin extract.
I ran the air still today with a similar result to yesterday. Distillate was not cloudy and flavour was not strong.
In both of these the juniper was predominant but not strong.

I have been making Zymurgy Bob's gin extract (using the air still). I use 100ml to 600ml neutral and that seems about right.
I have made Roku gin ( with green tea and szechuan pepper) and a sort-of-forty-spotted (maybe 33.5 spotted) and they seem to have turned out all right.

So an interesting experiment but i have not been able to replicate your results.

I will see how it goes for other people.

Thanks for posting.

Cheers
Carol

This looks a lot like a hydrosol Gin recipe I saw on You Tube a while back. Barley and Hops I think. From memory, he did the distillation in a glass laboratory unit. I tried it using my Airstill and was disappointed in the results. I put it down to the different distilling apparatus, though I gotta say this uses nowhere near the amount of botanicals compared to Zymurgy Bob's gin extract for a similar quantity.

Always good to experiment with new things though. I like the sound of your Roku Gin Carol. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hi peter
When I make Zymurgy Bob's gin extract I strain the spirit and reuse the botanicals for a second maceration. ( I replace the orange peel and lavender head etc). That seems to get the most out of them.

Cheers

One thing I've made is a lot of gin and I see some major flaws which I'd appreciate if you could clarify on.

A standard base for a London dry gin would be as follows.

1lt neutral spirit
20g juniper berries
10g coriander
0.2-0.5g orange/lemon peel

Some juniper heavy gins can even have 30g of juniper per litre.

In my opinion 35g of juniper and 2g of coriander is not even close to being enough for 15 litres. It would barely be enough for 2 litres of gin.

35 ÷ 15 equals 2.3g of juniper per litre.

2 ÷ 15 equals 0.13 g of coriander per litre.

Not even close to being an extract unfortunately.

I only own small stills so extracts are something that's always interested me and I've experimented lots with them. I'll post my tried and true gin essence shortly.
