Hi guys. Currently have a 10L stockpot with a 1.5" boka, but am aiming bigger with a 50L keg a mate gave me, with a 1.5m packed 3" column with removable boka atop.

Looking to make Scotch and Irish style whiskys and will be experimenting with different gin recipes for a commercial operation.

Looking forward to going through the many recipes posted for barley based whiskys. Never used grain before so am excited to see what I can make!

Wrlcome ditching the stock pot for a keg is a good move :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Hi mate welcome.

Yep get rid of that stock pot before it burns your house down :handgestures-thumbupleft:

If you want to do gins and whiskey you will need a pot still as well.

Good luck

Thanks guys for the welcome.

The stockpot has worked pretty good at making neutrals and I'll probably still use it as it will make a good size for any spirit runs from a single batch in my 27L fermenting barrel. Ive found that the small boka wide open and an unpacked column outputs similar rates as a pot. A strip run will result in around 35% from a 9% sugar wash and take roughly 2 hours from turning the gas on to shutting it down.

I use a gas burner in the shed at the moment for the pot and it is plenty big enough for the keg too, but I will be going electric at some point.

I'm not saying the stock pot won't work, I'm saying that most stock pot stills I've seen are dangerous. They are tricky to seal, most are sealed with poor quality rubber that leaches into spirit and run the risk of heavier than air alcohol vapour leaking out of the lid straight into an open flame.

You can run small batches in a keg if your on gas. It's only when your on electric you need to watch the elements don't run dry.

For safetys sake put the stock pot away :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Best of luck

Ahh, gotcha. My stockpot isn't a Chinese still but was put together by me. It uses a seal/o-ring made of EPDM and doesn't need any flour paste to seal properly. From what I've seen, it has a better seal than the T500 boiler.

Welcome! Getting a bigger boiler is a top move! If you’re gonna do a run, may as well do a decent one!
