Hi all, Lewis here from SEQ Lockyer Valley.
Wifey got me a Turbo 500 kit, I have been seeing lots of hate around the joint for it but surely it’s not bad to learn the basics, dip my feet in then go from there.
I love rum, especially the darker Bundys so I reckon I’ll try to get close to them.

Hey mate welcome from another SEQ (brisbane) member and Merry Xmas to you and your family.

The turbo 500 stills aren't that bad as an entry in to home distillation, it gets the hate from all the turbo yeast dribble that comes with it from the guys at the hbs. Remember these guys are trying to take your money. New members come along and try pushing it here and the members have heard it all before. Reality is tried and proven recipes are called such for a reason. once you try one of the neutral recipes you will not go back to a turbo wash.

Do you have the reflux and alembic dome for the t500 or the reflux only ?

I forgot to add, use the turbo yeast whilst learning to run the rig. Keep a little sample for taste comparison, to a wbab, tpw or tffv.

T500s aren't that bad, people just tend outgrow their capabilities fairly quickly.

Have a read of of this to help you get the best out of it: So you bought a home brew shop still...

You'll definitely want to ditch the turbo kits in favour of one of the recipes from the tried and proven section. I can recommend WBAB but TPW or Teddy's FFV are also good.

I just have the fractionating column stainless one, so I think I don’t have an alembic dome? Sorry, very new to all this.

The alembic dome is copper dome that clamps onto the boiler in place of the regular lid and usually has a small pot still attached to it. It is used for making flavoured spirits such as whiskey, gin etc. It sounds like you have a standard T500 column which is used to make neutral/vodka.

You have just entered a hugely rewarding hobby. Read and re read the newbie section. It took me about 4 times as I felt I was drowning in info. Little bits often mate and you will absorb the good info in there.
Like every other noob here I have learnt there is no short cut for time mate.
Take your time be careful and ask questions. Remember this is about having fun not a second job so if it stops being fun it will be time to step back and breath mate and try again when the pressure is off.
