Gday from a noob

Say Hi and introduce yourself

Gday from a noob

Postby Grub » Thu Aug 01, 2013 11:05 am

Hello peoples,

Justin, aka Grub, from Aberglasslyn (near Maitland) NSW and I am new to this.

My main inspirations for looking into this wonderful hobby;
- keep my mind active, as I like to experiment and try things
- something to get me away from the wife and into the shed
- and my father-in-law, who makes a really nice beer but i reckon I should make a spirit or two to share as well

Intended alcohol type produced - white rum, rum, scotch
Store bought or home built - advice please
Budget - like most people, as little as possible otherwise the wife will castrate me
Building skills - i race and build r/c boats and cars, so I'm used to tinkering
Gas - electric - prefer electric but willing to take advice
Your distilling experience - nil, zot, nothing, zero, refer to next line
Have you conducted any research - have found quite a number of really good articles on this forum and they have created a spark

I have looked at the ebay "specials" and thought "hmmmmm this seems to good to be true". Thats why I ended up here and looking for advice to point me in the right direction.

There is nothing worse than starting a new hobby the wrong way, have seen many people wanting to race r/c stuff but buy cheap crap, turn up once, break it and you never see them again.

Welcome mate, great intro.

As JayD said, you're probably best off starting with a pot still, that'll let you experiment with whisky and rum (white rum may have to wait for a bit). You can build one for about $100, and get a keg set up for about another $100. If you're not so keen on building one yourself, PM JayD. Commercial built pots are a waste of money.

If you're happy with electric stick to that, if set up properly I recon it's a bit safer.

Welcome to the forum.
This will hobby definitely keep you active.
An old keg (most people get them off Gumtree) and an electric element (you can get them from this forum) is what most people use as boiler. Cheap and efficient
