Have finished my 4 plates now, except for their weep holes. 2 are going in the 3" unions, 1 in the bottom 4" union and 1 is a snug fit in the 3" column - suspended by a ss rod.

They need a good clean up. Citric acid bath is the go right? will do a bit of research....

Now to touch up on some tig skills.

Had to get a heap of work out of the way to get back onto this. Have been mucking around with my tig over the last week. fairly new at tig so no real pretty welds yet.... but getting better as I go.
Starting to come together now.

Ah, saw you picked up the pair from albany creek. Nice score! I swear there was half a dozen on gumtree around the sunny coast a few weeks ago!

RC tubes welded in and leak tested.


RC welded to top module.



Not far to go now. Still gotta weld the cap reducer to the top of the RC.


Still have to organise some sight glass.

Have you thought about using ferrules & clamps to give your still a bit of flexibility as opposed to welding it all solid?
Just gives you more options.

thanks! yeh, I thought about making the RC modular also, but welded it to keep costs down a bit. I think the only changes I make down the track may be to add more plates for neutrals, which I can do by swapping out the middle column for a longer one with a taller plate tree inside. Not all solid, just semi-modular.

finished welding the top on the RC this arvo. Holds itself together now!!! :D



What is the go with borosilicate glass? I think my SG's will have to be custom sizes for this rig. is this something glass places stock and can cut?

OK, got myself a keg! Got around to welding the 4" ferrule to the top and a 1" BSP fitting for the element to the bottom this arvo.

Also got a 3600w element and a couple of sight glasses this week.

Need to weld on some plates for the sight glasses to mount to.

Have made a parrot while looking for the keg as well.

I inverted the keg to allow for 2" drain port underneath.

I'm guessing you must have a 15 A circuit to run your TIG and 3600 W element?

I've enjoyed reading this thread. Looks like you've done a good job of saving the hard earned by re-purposing used items. Big thumbs up :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks mate, yep, built a new shed and a sparky mate wired it up for me with a 15A circuit for welding ect :D

got a bit more done this week too. Now have sight glasses sorted!

welds are getting better, pity I had to grind these down flush though...


got some ss hex key bolts and tapped metric threads into the backing plates.



Also plumbed up a drain tap for the boiler using the 2" keg ferrule.
sorting out an element shield, a stand and the water plumbing now.

i was working on my guard element today when I ran out of map gas.... :crying-blue:
"hmmm, I wonder if my tig will weld copper..."
give it a try...
"YES! YES IT DOES!!!"

Welded up a cup out of 2". hammered out a flange on the open end.


welded on a threaded section of ss tube to boiler around bsp element fitting. (same as what you would find on the bottom of a sink)


place cup flange against threaded tube.


do up big brass sink s-trap nut that I trimmed up and polished.


just have to put a hole and grommet in the end for the lead and sort out an earth connection.

I picked up some steel on the weekend and welded up a stand. Painted it in satin Black. And today I welded a bracket to the side of the boiler to support the parrot.
So close now! :happy-partydance:
