2” bubbler?

Postby Hick1960 » Fri Dec 24, 2021 2:16 pm

Well it looks like I haven’t been good enough for Santa to bring me the 5Star 4” visualiser I’ve had my eye on this year but noticed on their site 2” bubble plate kits. If I was to put 4 of these on my 2” pot column, would they work the same as a 4” bubbler but just slower?
Not sure I could get the finance past the finance minister to buy the 4” visualiser at the moment so just toying with the idea of building on what I have.

Yes, but you will need something to provide reflux as well though

If it was me I’d wait until you get sign off from the minister of finance for the 4 inch neutraliser, unless that is unlikely to ever occur

Don't quote me but I'm sure I have read somewhere a 2" bubble plate doesn't do as good a job as the 4" plate.
I second getting a 4"
I run at 2.47L/hour with the 4". im pretty time poor so gives me a lot more alcohol for the same amount of time.

Thanks guys. Been doing a bit more research. Think I’ll give the 2 “ a miss and work on a 4”. I’ll start from the bottom and build a 50ltr keg boiler then tell the wife I need something bigger to fit on top of it. That might work :))

Here's my 2" bubble plate column.

The reason I went with a 2" bubble plate setup was I got the parts at the right price from a friend who was moving overseas and couldn't take them with him.

I have been slowly getting this setup together and after the saga of the HBS T500 I figured I would do it properly and buy once / cry once. Massive shout out too Andrew at 5 Star with the help getting the 50l milk can boiler sorted out.

Not pictured is 2 x 500mm packed sections that I can use for making neutrals and another 45 degree bend that I intend to use when I reconfigure to use it in pot still mode I have deliberately left the cooling hoses a little bit longer than needed to give me some wiggle room. Please ignore the crap in the background - it's been a long, long week and I am still putting stuff away after an epic all grain beer brewing session last weekend - we knocked out 10 x 20 ltr no chill cubes in 14hrs on Saturday followed by a massive CIP session on Sunday and I still haven't caught up. :D

Don't ask me how it runs - I haven't had a chance to put a cleaning run through it yet - hopefully it will work as intended :D

Hi Hick1960
5 Star do have the 2” reflux condensers (just not in shop yet) so you “could” put together a 2” bubbler .
But, seriously , I wouldn’t do it.
The 2” plates aren’t anywhere near as efficient as the 4” simply because there isn’t enough surface area.
We started stocking these simply as a visual upgrade to the 2” (turbo) rigs out there.
Now, having said that, there’s nothing wrong having a rig as pictured by haza above as long as you understand the limitations.
A 4” will produce at 2.5L/hour -3L/hour, the 2” around 900ml or 1L/hour and as stated above the plates will not perform as well.
Cheers

Thanks Stig,
I thought that would be the case. I’ll get my keg boiler built when I receive my goodies from you and then I’ll look into a 4”. That 4” neutraliser looks mighty fine. :handgestures-thumbupleft:

We could also do you a glassalizer :laughing-rolling:
