Boiler size

Postby Kermadum » Sun Jan 15, 2023 7:55 am

I have a 4” column still with 4 bubble plates and a length of packed column that I mix and match depending on what I’m trying to achieve.

I’m thinking about boiler size and wondering apart from quantity is there any advantage to a larger boiler? Does bigger volume make it easier to achieve consistent quality? In my brain it would, but I can’t really articulate why I have come to that conclusion, and have no sound data to back it up.

Bigger boiler helps even out the ratios, assuming it is filled with wash or low wines.
4 litre boiler (airstill ) equals very small cut sizes 25 ml is .625% of volume
50 litre boiler equals bigger cuts 312.5 ml is still .625 of volume
100 litre boiler bigger again 625 ml is still .625 % of volume

This makes finding the cut off points a little easier potentially leading to better consistency.

I reckon you already knew the answer but no why lol

Don’t forget however I am over wrong, just never in doubt :laughing-rolling:

Bigger boiler saves time on heat up.

Thanks guys!

That makes sense. I love it when I think something and turns out to be kinda right.

I’ve been floating around for a while, and hadn’t posted anything. More a lurking in the background observing kinda guy. But will go say hi
