If its any re-assurance, I've run mine on a 38c day, with no real still issues, but rocks in my head for thinking I could handle it! Thats with 3 x 3/4 tubes, your 5 half inchers should cope well.
I think an adelade summer will be the real test.

Downcomer design,

thinking is, utilise full plate without a drop area i.e. fully drilled = EG's design, provides visibilty of dropping liquid like a cup would for knowing what's happening , better disperses liquid. Well that's the thinking we'll see how it goes in col when done i guess.

You're onto the idea mate.
Jeez I hope it works. Would make for a kick ass arangement.

At the end of the day, gravity wins. The plates should only fill so much before it pushes down. Unless you are pushing that much vapor up that it can't cope. Good reason to have variable heat input.

I guess you should make the area of the outlet as big or bigger than the area of the tube. And set the next plate downcomer height at the highest level of the outlet.

Good idea there mate :handgestures-thumbupleft: , how do you stop the vapour from passing up thru the downcommer?

Hello all,

Yeh Kimbo was thinking that the plate foot would by it's angle deflect and the base part of the foot is not drilled ...may need to spot solder one or two holes btw.

Fair enough, my understanding was that you need liquid in the down comer to act as an air lock to stop vapour passing thru and this helps the plates to load up. Otherwise you will have a bit of trouble getting the whole unit to load up and balance :?:

Honesty don't know kimbo...hadn't considered that aspect..EG's design doesn't have cups however...might need to re think it i guess.

It should work.
Top plate will fill, liquid will travel down the downcomer, providing a fluid lock and forcing the vapor through the holes, not the downcomer.
Other plates below should fill the same way.

So how does the fluid stay in the down comer to form a lock? :?

Guys,

now realise i have a problem. There's no mechanism for downcomers to form a fluid lock...

had thought pure vapour spped would force the straightest path i.e. via plate...sounding like that's wrong...vapour will find the path of least resistance that is via the downcomers.

Would appreciate advice as I'll have to retro fix or revamp downcomers to tube and cup...something i was hoping to avoid.

The fliuid on the plate below.

So long as the top of the hole is covered, by setting the downcomer height on the next plate, it will form a fluid lock. Vapor is then forced through the holes.

BT1, you might have to shorten the "foot" a little, as you dont want to have to set the downcomers in the next plate too high.

But the main trick is in the J cup on the bottom plate. Without that, it wont work. It provides the fluid lock the rest of the plates need.

If you think of a weir plate design, there is no cups.
