6 Week Bubbler Challenge

Perforated & bubble cap plated columns

So I officially have the worst track record with sight glasses...

Once the column filled with steam on the vinegar run, 3 out of the 6 SG's cracked :angry-banghead:

Will have to re-fit them as loosely as I can...I really didn't think they were done up that tight...some of them when I backed them off slightly, seemed too loose 8-}

Those were my last 6, so will have to wait for a coming shipment and re-try next weekend

Try this mate.

Wrap the easy flange around the edge with PTFE tape, place the glass on then continue to wrap both the glass and flange... loosely fit clamp.

You'll need the column lying down to do the above easily.

Now cap the bottom of the lowest tee and fill the column with water, RC and the rest removed.

Watch for leaks, tighten as required... you'll find that the clamp doesnt even need to be in place to seal the SG's as they are merely there to hold in place rather than needing pressure to seal & the weight of the water in the column is a lot greater than the any pressure during distilling.

This will also make the seal thinner allowing the clamp to surround the glass better.

See how it goes, if it doesnt work forget I ever mentioned it :))

If you need pics let me know & I'll do a quick mock up.

Thanks Mac :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Now that my ferrules are dead flat, this method and a loosely fastened clamp should do it...I obviously overtightened them.

I'm also using 2 silicon gaskets on each, as originally 1 seemed too thin...but I will revisit this and see if I can get away with 1. If I can, that should get a more even grip on the glass as you mentioned.

Thanks again :D

What Mac said. I cracked one on me vinegar run. Then when it was all cold I noticed all the sg clamps were loose. "Better tighten those up" i said. Bad move, cracked another 2 or 3 and I was SOSin olMac. Sorry youngMac. Haven't cracked any since, but yeah, they don't like any pressure, and with your new flat ferrules they don't need any pressure. So Brendan, are they totally fucked or are you gonna do a sacrificial?

Oh they're fucked :handgestures-thumbdown:

I had the forethought to order a care package from young Mac last week in anticipation, so I'll re-attempt vinegar run later this week.

I can't be disappointed completely, every other part of the rig was perfect and leak free. And the double needle valve coolant lines were a dream to control :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Just wondering in the interests of accuracy perhaps this could be renamed the 17 weeks and counting challenge :teasing-tease:

It's ok mate, I'm happy to wait.

Might have taken a bit, but its all worth it in the end to have a bubbler :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Nah, just invoke a penalty for failing the challenge, remember this:

blond.chap wrote:A few suggestions (as a penalty clause):

- Confined to only making turbo wash with essences for a year
- 50 lashes
- Embarrassing signature and/or avatar
- Made to watch the entire Twilight series back to back
- General public ridicule
- Sacrifice your first born son

So I see we're using my thread to get to 60,000 tonight :laughing-rolling:

I've just made a youtube account and am uploading the stuff, so it's on the way.

Well only got the vinegar run done tonight, will be doing the saccrificial alcohol run in the morning.

So here's a couple of videos, it's only vinegar today, but at least it's shown running! :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Here it is in full reflux, showing the downcomers working at 25mm

Showing the boiler window, as well as the plate in action again and collection

Shows the plate while in full collection, so minimal liquid on the plate
