Obviously the last update wasn't significant enough for anyone to care...

Got most of the PC done tonight. A bit of fucking around trying to hard solder the 1/2" brass sockets to the 2" with MAPP gas but I got there in the end. Ended up soft soldering the second one.

Got one end complete, tomorrow I'll have a crack at the other end. I miss my oxy!

Looking good Zak.
You put that twist in the pipes on purpose I gather.

Keep up the good work zac... I'm living vicariously through you atm. Due to flu and rental inspection I haven't progressed for a cpl weeks.

How much of a difference do you think the twist will make? As I did the same on my pc and my rc. Much more pronounced on my rc.
I read lots of builds doing it but not many reports on how much difference it made.
It sure did make the silver soldering much easier as it made the pipes fit very tight on the ends.

To be honest, the twist is there because I used soft-drawn copper for the inners and had to twist it for them to fit inside the 2" :laughing-rolling: but thanks for thinking there's some science behind it.

After breakfast I might try to get the rest of the PC sealed up.

:laughing-rolling: perhaps that's the case with all of the builds I read and there's no follow up reports because there's no advantage.

Oh well not like there's any extra work involved

To test the difference you'd have to find someone who has built both and tested them... The shotty on my 3" pot was 500mm x 2" with 7x 3/8" inners and that knocked down over 10L/hr with no hassles.

Because the old one was the first thing I ever soldered, and it is uuuuugly with a dodgy homemade 2"-3/4" reducer on the bottom and a pinhole leak in the top plate.

This one is a bit prettier. One end done!

image.jpg

The little sliver of copper is because I couldn't for the life of me clean a little bit of shit out of the join mid-solder.

The other end is uglier, and hard soldered, so I'm going to cut a sleeve of 1" copper to cover the socket and get a good join.

Probably cause otherwise the pot won't knock down over 10L an hour :text-lol:

Nice progress there on the PC :handgestures-thumbupleft:

with the brass fitting that is soft soldered that didnt work properly, would it be easier to just heat it up, take it out and clean the join and go again being a small part?

What method will you use to clean the solder up, the dag bits? I normally use a file but this requires sanding after for a smooth finish so im open to better suggestions :D

I've got an old flap disc that's worn down to bugger all. It eats solder but doesn't take much copper off.

Easier to just build a little sleeve out of 1"... The fittings are going to be on the back of the PC anyway, so you won't be able to see them. I've got 1/2" BSP to 1/2" swagelok elbows to fit my hard cooling lines :handgestures-thumbupleft:

With soft solder I have found a lot of the exess can be shaved of carefully with a sharp stanley knife, just donot try and take off too much in one go.Keep up the tempo Zac and she will be ready soon!.cheers hillzabilly ;-)

G'day Zac,
Well with you throttling on getting this still done I thought best get off my butt and get those brass plates done for ya. Anyway just set up the rotary table and it didn't take long to drill the holes. Now just to be sure to be sure of these plates sealing I took a skim off each side to make them true.

If you got all the copper disks cut bring em up when you come up and I still have the mill setup so we can drill the holes for 3mm threads.

Cheers Bryan
