How to easy flange, video

Postby woodduck » Tue Oct 17, 2017 8:42 pm

Here's a vid I've done showing how to do an easy flange with soft solder and an LPG torch, YES it can be done :handgestures-thumbupleft: these flanges can be done on 2,4 and 6" pipe (maybe others aswell). They can be hard soldered of course if you prefer. You will see you only need very basic tools so pretty much anyone can have a crack at it :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I learnt how to do this from this thread of Mac's, it's well worth a read
viewtopic.php?f=41&t=76#p368

I was a bit nervous so there was a bit of shaking and rushing and rabbiting on, it wasn't my best effort of making a flange but it will give you an idea of what's involved. It's very amateurish and I was working off camera a bit but hey it's not bad for a bloke like me :laughing-rolling:

I should mention that I did put flux on the top of the flange aswell as the inside, this is important to remember I just forgot to press record.

Well here it is,

Well done on the video Mr Duck, very easy to follow and understand. One question though, where would we find the hose and tip that you used for the gas bottle? Can you get them from Bunnings or some place like that?

@woodduck you have done a magic job on shooting video, it's so much better to learn from apposed to reading pages & pages, like the old saying goes "it's worth a thousand words". I always wondered how you guys make that bevelled lip that sits in the triclamp...,& you made it look so easy :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Thanks guys, hope it made sence and helps :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I'm not real sure where to get the torch from, I got mine at a garage sale. Best bet would be ebay or the local hardware/tool shop I guess. BOC might have them but probably pricey.

Love it! Thanks for a great vid.
One question though:
Can you soft solder the flange ring instead of hard soldering it? Or will it melt and come open when you go to soft solder it onto the pipe?
I wasn't sure if beating it flat would take any internal spring/tension out of it or not.

Cheers,
Jono.

Nah can't soft solder the ring unfortunately mate. It will just brake. You should be able to hard solder it with most tourches though because the 1/4" is small enough to get red hot.
