keg mods in brisbane

Postby zippytheclown » Mon Dec 09, 2013 5:01 pm

Hey guys, I have a keg in my garage and was wondering if there is anybody in brisbane that you guys can recommend to modify it into a pot still for me. I see JayD has these for sale, and I'm sure if I was in Taz I could exchange it to him, but hardly worth the freight to send it from here. Any suggestions on who I could talk to?

Thanks in advance
Bill

If it's a 50L beer keg you can buy or make the pot still head then clamp it straight on :handgestures-thumbupleft:

that should unscrew and a 2" still will clamp onto it...you will need to de presurise it first. Check out these vids, the third one after mine(vids) is the same as yours.

Have a search for removing a spear from a keg, something you can do at home. Then a 2" tri-clamp fitting hooks up pretty nice.

Check out this guys details at the end of the page. (I don't know how good the still head itself is)

If you do drill the stainless keg yourself, use cutting lube and a slow drill otherwise you will work harden the stainless and burn out the drill bit. Don't be scared to drill for 5 secs and stop, drill, stop. It may take longer but you will get the job done.

I've use a set of these ebay stepped drill bits on a lot of holes. Just drill a pilot hole first and remember take it easy.

I'm in salisbury, near mount gravatt.

I've watched a couple of vids, but none explain how to get the fitting at the top out, I understand about the circlip and spear, but what about the bit at the top

If you are looking for good stainless work in brisbane then I can vouch for the guys at quality beekeeping supplies, summers park.

They do it at a fair price and know what you are doing it for so happy to discuss it all,

I am no affiliation apart from a happy previous customer

I assume you've figured it out, but just in case...once you have depressurised, then popped the circlip out, twisted and spear & spring removed...then this piece will twist off with a good pair of stilsons..

My first one took us half an hour! It was an old keg, and the thing didn't want to budge (plus having the right size stilsons helps)...if you're having trouble, persevere....it DOES come off :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I found that some of the kigs in the picture don't have a hole in the top of the seal where you can insert a screwdriver and hammer off so I just got my angle grinder and made a small notch making sure not to cut into the 2" furrell underneath. I then got a flat headed screwdriver and and placed in the notch and used a hammer and hit it anti clockwise and the whole to eventually unscrewed :handgestures-thumbupleft: somemof them are a little sitff with sticky beer residue so a little force is necessary

I got mine off by using a large F-clamp and wrapped it up in some cricket bat grip. It gave enough friction to allow it to spin and loosen up enough to undo by hand. Real aussies use a cricket bat grip :teasing-tease:

yes but first either place a towel over it and your head off to the side or place the keg on it's side other wise you will be covered in left over beer...be carefull here.

If you're having trouble with that...dig a screwdriver into the rubber o-ring (between the o-ring and the center button thing), and pry it around a bit, you should get the gas starting to let out...all of this with a towel over as mentioned :handgestures-thumbupleft:

On one I used a cold chisel and a hammer to put a dent in the edge then used this dent with the chisel on an angle to knock it loose :handgestures-thumbupleft:
