Polishing your SS Keg

Hey all,

I recently finished another stage of polishing my SS Keg and because it is going so well, I thought I would share the how and what!

If it is a new keg, you don’t have to do this stage or if it is an old keg that is super clean, please go to step 2 also.

Step 1 – Get a SS wire brush for your drill and buff out any discolored or stained areas. Note; it is important to use stainless steel on stainless steel or you will run the risk of small metal particles becoming trapped in the surface and rusting!

This next step is where you will need to order some specialist sand papers. I used a 150mm drill Velcro drill attachment with following sandpaper grades;
• 200 Grit
• 400 Grit
• 600 Grit
• 800 grit
• 1200/1500 grit
I found I used anywhere between 6 and 12 pieces of each grade and the total bill for 5 packs of the above grits and SS wire brush was around $80 (sandpaper was in packets of 20)

Step 2 – Sand the whole keg with the 200 grit moving through the finer grits to finishing with the 1200/1500 grit. I occasionally wet the keg so it was a semi-wet sand. After you have finished sanding each grit, wash the keg with soapy water.

Step 3 – After your final sanding, we are now up to polishing your keg. There are many products on the market but I have purchased Autosol cream with a wool circular buffing pad. Apply the cream and buff it, that's it!

Step 4 - Stand back and check out the mirror finish!! ^:)^

Good luck!

PS; if any ACT locals want some sand paper as above, PM me and we can work something out :smile:

Seems like a lot of effort when you see the results that bt1 got with 2 grades of polishing?

I tried that Josco compound etc like bt1 and it really didn't do much at all. Maybe it is because the keg was new and had some form of finish on it?
