Hi Blinky,

What are you charging 1st and 2nd retort with for best flavour, is it wash, molasses, feints or a combination of these?

If using feints in the combo what ratio/ABV percentage?

Cheers

I have been running a double retort for about a year now. For rum there is nothing that comes close if done right. The amount of flavours you can get with the 2 retort’s are really next level.

200l boiler with 2x 50l keg’s plumbed together with 25mm copper pipe works very well. Collecting at around 6 or 7 litres per hour and depending on the retort charge will sit around 76-82%.
Retort only need about 3 litres in each and will finish with about 8-10 in each depending on how long you run into tails.

Thanks Blinky - Really appreciated :handgestures-thumbupleft:
At 6-7 litre/hr are you running at 3600 watt ?

For rum at the moment It’s a combination of heads/early hearts, cane vinegar, old dunder and contents of previous retort but that changes. I use tails to reduce abv if over 50% for 1st retort.

Not to sure on watts but I think around 12k

I wouldn’t get to carried away with what you have to do with the retort’s, the wash contributes 70% of the flavour and the retorts take it to the next level.

Hi Blinky,

What volume of forshots are you discarding on a 200Ltr run through your setup? Also are you firing boiler via electric elements or gas, for 12Kw i would assume gas?

Work sent me interstate for 2 weeks so have done nothing for a while.
Did give me a chance to raid the old man’s stainless stash while I was down there :-D
He can’t weld any more so he let me at the good stuff.

Hey mate. Sorry about the delayed response, I’m in the fruit and veggie business and it gets crazy this time of the year.

Nothing is discarded, but I generally take out about 4-4.5 litres of fore’s which are then kept for use in the next run. I do the cuts on taste so those numbers can change depending on ferment temps and yeast. If you’re ageing for a long time and get a bit of evaporated don’t be scared of a little late heads.

Yeah gas
