Ok after having a read on smearing as I knew not what you were talking about would't a 9mm take off tube have a good flow rate, enough not to make a huge difference depending on the length of it of course which I was going to have maybe 1 meter long or were you guys talking about the point where I put the needle valve onto.

I was still going to put the needle valve at the top but have about a meter take off tube, after all I still havn't made any cuts yet and I have been using the little HBS still, it's beside the one in the picture lol if you seen it.

I think I will just cut the packed column down to 1.2-1.3 meters, I think I'm better off.

Yeah mate as long as the valve is at the top then no worries, it only matters where liquid is going to pool in the still.

After the valve it doesn't matter if you run the pipe down to bench level or wherever you want your collection jars (within reason) :handgestures-thumbupleft:

I would keep the packed column 1500 but that's just me ;-)

Ok so I have been :think: and reading too much so have deciecded to add the VM part to my boka before I have even finished it. I was going to put maybe a 1" tee to 1/2" takeoff, would this be too small? large valve cost so much but I don't really want to restrict it for a few dollars.

What would optimal size be for 2.5" column, can't really find too much on take off sizings for VM or if someone could link a good topic would be apperciated, thanks guys for all the help so far.

Mat i think that valve might be a bit small. I asked a similar question a little while back

I went with a 1" and am happy with that.

The take off in a VM is the ratio of the area of the column to the area of the outlet.
If the outlet is too small then you wouldnt be able to strip for example.

The dual reducer VM s get around the issue by reducing the column area at the takeoff point to keep the two closer in ratio.

C2H60 where did you get your copper tee piece from, I will be need a 2.5" tee with 1" outlet might try tradelink again, think they might be getting sick of my orders, ordering as I need things :)) I think 1.5" valve could get a bit pricey.

I had a mate who was a plumber keep his eye out and scored me a lot of the bits a pieces. A lot of guys on here make tee's for their bubblers, you could always give that a crack if you're handy with the solder. I bought my gate valve on ebay it's not awesome quality but it hasn't show any sign of rust yet. Had a bit of a look on my phone and there is a few 1.5 valves on there for about $50. Also check out the company Mac suggested on the link I put up, might get a reasonable price off them.

Thanks mate wasn't sure if my solder would hold up, might give it a try, this is a rough drawing of what I was going to make, anyone see any problems or something that could be better?

My suggestion would be to stick a Triclamp between the valve and the condenser .......I didn't on mine and its a royal PITA assembling it .....and my condenser was only 400mm long , not a meter

Good one Yummy didn't think of that so 400mm is well long enough? and just though about the reducer part at the bottom of the condenser, it's still going to reducer vapour flow right? Might put a angle 1" on the bottom to help direct the flow.

what happens after the condenser won't effect vapour flow ...its the liquid end....so you are fine with your reducer there .

A 2" shotty will be great and you could use it later on if you decide to make a bubbler :handgestures-thumbupleft: .Also they are very efficient ,the distillate will come out at 20Deg easily with bearly a trickle so you can run the water through the shotty and then up through the reflux coil and it will work very well

Hahaha bubbler later on I dought it I am getting reemed now for this job, I will see what the scrap yard has tomorrow maybe 1.5" shotty, what ever I can make out of what they have will aim for a 500mm shotty with 1/4" tube, sound about right Yummy? Thanks foe yo help too BTW

I'd use 3 x 1/2" inside 1.5"

Mine I did 5 x 3/8" in a 1 1/2" shell Here....but what zac said would be much easier

Remember you column is 2 1/2" so you will be able to use more heat so might pay to make it a tad bigger .....having said that ,I've only ever run mine at 1400 watts though and its never been over powered

:)) So I have had another idea not mine but was thinking to reduce height I might cut the top off my boka condenser and make a hammerhead style shotty condenser at the top diamension 2.5" X 12" using 1/2" tube.
What do you guys think.
