Hey guys,

Been thinking a bit about getting a Boka lately.

Just thinking, dangerous I know, but is there a particular reason why people don't use a Boka for a stripping run? (Or do they?)

Output valve open wide and let 'er rip?

I would've thought that the RC would knock down the vapours without any reflux and you collect all the liquids that fall onto the slant plates after the PC.

What am I missing here?

A Boka without packing could be used in that fashion but the issue is mainly with the pc. The coil will have trouble knocking down the vapour with a lot of power thrown at it and product will come out quite hot. A shotty or a long liebig is a better option in a stripping situation. I use a pot still that has an inbuilt coil condenser. It does a good job on spirit runs where the take off rate and therefore the power requirements are low. During stripping runs it really struggles to do the job. I can use it but it is slow. The FSD 2” pot would be a good option for stripping runs.

Thanks for reply Les, that does make sense.

I was just thinking if a Boka could be configured as a hybrid still or not. I'm not trying to cheap out, it's part of my research.

So, theoretically if the PC on a Boka is something like theFSD 2" shotty PC it could be possible?

That’s why we do the Pot Head option for the Boka

Hi Tesla

I have the boka and pot. It was cost effective as it uses the same column. For a few hundred dollars it makes my life easier. Given the cost of good quality vodka it pays for itself in no time.
Cheers
Carol

ps I can post some pics of the pot still set up if you like.

Sorry Carol, one more question. Do you remove the packing when you use Natasha for a stripping run?

Yes Tesla No packing in a stripping run.
One stripping run (one fermenter of wash) takes me 2.5 to 3 hours.
While I am keeping an eye on Natasha, I clean the fermenter and refill it.
Three stripping runs for a spirit run with Boris ( packing back in).

Thanks for the pics and posts Carol. My chuppa chup arrived today.I noted on a earlier post of your water in on the left - thanks for that. Also if by chance you or another poster might know - when I'm using the pot attachment to strip does it matter what angle I place it at,? Obviously it can swivel because of the two 90 degree joints from anywhere from vertical down to almost the horizontal and anywhere in between.
BTW mine is called Roka :))
Cheers and thanks Geoff

Hey Geoff,
You can have the “Pot” arm (condenser) any where from absolute vertical to almost horizontal.
When using that condenser , water in at the bottom and out at the top

I've been doing some stripping runs over the weekend and I think its going ok.Its hot up here in Cairns and the tap water is also warm but I have stripped a variety of washes that include weetbix, corn flakes, cracked corn ,caro malt etc.
I've had these fermenting whilst eagerly awaiting the FSD still. :-D
Probably a little off topic as its a FSD pot still on the FSD boka thread but I am producing varying amounts of product from my 25 litre washes.Usually distillation starts out at 65 -70% reducing to my cut off point of 20 %
About 4.5 - 6 litres depending on my wash.Does that sound about right.?

Also whilst sitting idle I wound my column packing. After working out the length ( also Andrew helped here ) - I bound the rolls as an aid in removing and installing them with Stainless lock wire ( aircraft industry stuff )The rolls are a nice snug fit - not loose.
Please feel free to comment if I've potentially overlooked something here
Regards Geoff

Hi Geoff

Amounts from stripping run sound roughly what I have been getting. Three stripping runs give me enough for a spirit run. Fun isn't it.

Cheers
Carol

Ifn your stripping for anything other than neutral, go down to 10 or lower, lots of good flavours in that last bit
