best overall reflux still for beginners

I am very new to the whole distilling scene and am looking to buy my first still, I was wondering what the best one would be to get and the pros/cons of different models, my budget is about $1000 any advice would be great

You have great timing mate. One of the memebrs will be hosting a charity auction for a brand new reflux still he is building in the next couple of weeks.

It would walk all over anything you could buy from a brew shop.

mainly whiskey, I would like dabble in a variety of different spirits though

A Bokakob (Slant Plate) Still is highly regarded as the best Still to start out with. That's how I started & have been running up until this week. It's pretty easy to get your head around, easy to operate, and can be "de-tuned" in a pinch to act as a pot still for your whisky & other flavoured spirits.
