external reflux return

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with external reflux return lines.
I'm just about to take the reflux condenser for my VM to the welder but am wondering if the 1/2 inch ferrule, return line will be large enough.
1/2 inch stainless has only 3/8 ID and I'm wondering if this will cope with the output of a 3 inch VM column under full steam?

I think 3/8 is a bit small ;-)

I'm planning on using 1/2 " or 12 mm on the monster I am building so I'd say at least 3/8 would be what you should shoot for (depending on what sizes are available in Stainless of course)
