Proposed LM Build

Hi All,

Since joining I have been doing a lot of reading and was going to purchase a built LM. One of my neighbers was having a huge clean up and has given me :D a 6mtr length of 76mm X 1.2 (3"), 25mm X 1.2 (1") and a 19mm X 1.0 (3/4"). There is also a box of copper fittings that I will need to go through.

I will attempt to build a 3" Bok and a Pot still with some pipe left over. Plan is to have a 1.2 colum with the 300mm bok attached via a tri clamp

Questions I have are

1) Is the 3" wall thickness of 1.2mm ok for the Bok and Pot Still.

2) For the condensor do I do a double 1/4" coil with coldfinger or do I just do a double wind with a larger diameter pipe?

3) Any other suggestions / ideas

Thanks

i reckon the wall thickness will not matter much, as long as it does not bend over in use it will be fine

personally i would be using 3/8 th to either wind a double coil or adapt a cold finger.
i like the 3/8 for it's ability for less constriction on water flow

but thats just me.... lots or most like 1/4 coils....

Have finally started the build with the condensor wind first up. After a lot of reading I decided to build a double wound condensor rolled around a Jig and fill with salt.

I might have rolled the coil too tight as there is approx 1/4' gap from oustide coil to coloum wall. Will this be an issue ? Should I rewind with a larger gap between first and second coil. Curently its about 1/16".

Hi Maheel
Pipe is 3/8" that was filled with salt and wound around a 3/4" mandrel. How close to the column wall should the outer coil be??? Im concerned that there may be too much of a gap?? I have checked it inside a 3" pipe and there is just under a 3/8" gap from ouside coil to pipe wall.

i thought it was 3/8 :)

you could stretch out a scrubber and wrap that around the coil, that will help any gap and stop vapor.

it should knock a lot down...

i was just thinking about making a coil just like it for a 3" bok i was thinking of making (i have the 3")

keep us posted

Thanks maheel

I will stretch out a scrubber and wrap it around outside of coil as suggested. Here is a pic of coil in 3"pipe.

Nice job on the coil Czedd......my first attempt at winding one is in my scrap pile :(

Looks the goods for sure! Keeps us posted how the rest of the build goes.

Looks fine to me, if you plug the inner space with some scrubby, it will force more air/vapour flow between the smaller gap between the coils and all will be good.

Cheers.

Been out of action for a while but getting back into the build. Here are some pics. Almost ready to start soldering

I cant seem to find a copy of the 3" Bok template. Can some one please send me the link or a copy.

Just cut your slots for the plates at roughly 30 degrees, then put your flat bits of copper in the slots and mark them... cut them a few mm too big and grind/file/sand them down once soldered in and you'll be fine ;)

Oh and dont forget the drip tab needs to be folded down once the bottom plate is soldered in.

The only one Ive seen is on HD somewhere I think...its a template for cutting the plate slots. The one Ive seen is for a 2 incher and you have to increase the size by adjusting your printer.
If you do find it Im interested in the template too.
BTW thats a good looking boiler ya got there ;)

This could be what you are looking for http://wiki.homedistiller.org/Boka_Refl ... w_To_Build
Not a template, just the design drawings.
Just adapt your design to the different tube size.
Nothing is set in concrete, just use the design criteria e.g. plate configuration, take-off tube & tap, condenser coil placement etc.

Cheers.

and leave at least 1 inch between the plates on a 3" column ;)

Thanks Guys, I have read the Boka build thread but was not confident with marking the cut lines for the plates. Couldnt find the 3" templates any where so I have taken your advice and upsized in my printer which has worked out well. The upsizing has also made the gap between the plates just over an 1" (1 1/16). Heres what it looks like
