Hot Borewater

Postby karrotbear » Tue Sep 23, 2014 7:10 pm

Hey Guys and Gals,

Been a while since I've been around and some of the builds look amazing!
Since moving to central qld, I've stopped with our much esteemed hobby due to having a garage that you can see into from the street (separated slats) and town water hot enough to shower in!

I've got a VM reflux and a pot still with a shotty condenser.

Just wondering if there are any solutions out there to cool the water apart from raiding the ice machine at work? I've got an old AC that I was thinking I could use as a cooler and just have a fan pointed at the aluminum fins but that's assuming that the copper piping through the heatsink is intact.

Fill an IBC and recirculate your cooling water?

Hey Karrotbear
Glad to hear you're still around the ridges.

How about a reservoir and pump?
That way it would be able to cool after filling.

Ready to use once cooled.

Sounds like you will be doing a real moonlight job.... stillin in the dark :-D :-D

I do have a spare IBC laying around, but then it would be getting a pump with enough head to get it through my system.
Another thing I have to contend with is dry heat (the kind that knocks the wind out of you once you step out of the AC).

I could probably have the water line go through an ice bucket aswell just to give it that extra chill factor?

Run your cooling water through a radiator with a thermo fan on it, on the way back into the IBC? Plenty of guys use pond pumps from Bunnings :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Bunnings would be great, cept I think the nearest one to me is about a 6 hour drive haha. I'll have a look on ebay and see what there is to see!

Anyone have any base values I should be looking for in a pump? In terms of L/h and m head?

This is the one i use http://www.commercialelectric.com.au/pdw-750 this is the one that they used to sell at bunnings and a lot of the guys here use.. I would recommend getting one without a float, they are a pain in the arse and just another thing that can go wrong.

Cheers

I got this one from eBay item no. 331308006078

I purchased this for a few reasons;

1. Super fast for recycling water out of tank
2. SS impeller and housing
3. Self priming
4. Can double use in pumping my runs straight into boiler

Only drawback is it was $235.00 but it hasn't missed a beat for me :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Seriously you only need a 250-300 watt pump ....even thats plenty .Seems guys buy the bigger pumps and then have all these bypasses and shit to stop them burning out due to the restricted flow that we need :-B

submersible pumps like the one pictured do not burn out, nor do they need bypasses when you have a pc :angry-banghead:

I've been running the same 750w pump for 4 years now, restricted flows and no bypass...... might be worth researching the shit your dribbling before making inappropriate comments and causing yet more confusion :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Well thats interesting Mac...I wasnt aware they can handle running like that.

I only commented because I had read several times here where bypasses were used. When I was at a mates we commented about how little water flow was needed to run his bubbler and his 250 w pump was gushing excessive amounts back into the tank .

Seeing as karrotbear is only using a 2" reflux and a pot I figured 250w is plenty.

Sorry if I caused confussion. ;-)

They are submersible and impeller driven. they will run all day at a trickle......

only thing to watch is the max operating temp ;-)

:text-+1: I put a bypass in my design several years ago...hasn't been used past the first couple of runs. Has been comfortably taking a restricted flow for almost 3 years without skipping a beat. Even leave it sitting in murky, slimy water for weeks on end, she just keeps going :handgestures-thumbupleft: Got the usual blue Bunnings jobbie that everyone's seen.

Welcome back Karrot,

Past member posted this idea once.. a little different ...but so was he :D

Remember those canvas water bags that self cooled used by truckies? same idea.

A pvc pipe with bleed holes drilled along one side, a sheet of material wire tied to that, connect pump to one end of the pvc tube to feed hot water in at the top, on the bottom he had a piece of 90mm storm water cut 1/3 out material tacked into storm water for collection. Slight slope to one side to get water to fall into a collection drum.

Simple, easy works on evaporation for cooling, can be easily wall or fence mounted/removable , mainly uses no more power.

As I said out there ...but hey it would work :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Another option. Bit more expensive in the long run....

We have 1 like this at my work for ice machine for that same reason. Water too hot.

Basically a reverse hot water system. A keg/container full of water in a fridge with copper tube coiled up inside of it with tap water going through the copper coils to cool water.

Just another 2 cents for the jar
